Position Summary

The Resource Sharing/Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department seeks students interested in a challenging behind-the-scenes work environment. Due to the timely nature of interlibrary loan workflows, we are seeking individuals with strong attention to detail, accuracy, and dependability.

Under direct supervision, Library Assistants work with University Libraries staff and other students in a team environment to:



  • Locate and retrieve materials from within the University Libraries.
  • Update returnable materials in UNM's integrated library system and ILL management system.
  • Prepare returnable materials for UNM patrons and other institutions.
  • Open mail, sorting items being returned from items being borrowed.
  • Scan requested chapters/articles using overhead scanners.
  • Shelve and distribute library materials, including delivery to department offices across campus.


This position offers hours Monday - Friday between 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Evening and weekend hours are not available. Successful applicants will have the opportunity for progressively independent work and increased responsibility. Benefits of this position include: gaining extensive knowledge of and experience with library fulfillment systems; receiving guidance and mentoring from library staff; and developing professional skills such as interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Applicants must be capable of working within a team environment. All UL&LS student employees are employed on a term basis for the current/impending school year. Library Assistants must be able to shelve books, deliver books to various locations on campus, and perform other physical activities as required.
