Position Summary

The Energy Engineer I position is primarily responsible for providing system and program engineering support to Franklin Energy operations teams, AM Conservation delivery teams, and utility clients. This engineer will provide technical support to other engineers, engineering managers, and program managers while also assisting in providing project management, training, design, and execution support for programs. Additional support will include assistance with program and new offering startups and system rollouts and migrations. Also, this position will work with engineering staff, program staff, and clients to resolve technical and reporting issues. This role primarily supports internal customers, however, may include Client and Evaluator interactions. Direct external customer interactions are limited in nature.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with business and building owners, developers, architects, engineers and contractors to provide energy efficiency advice and assistance in participating energy efficiency or energy conservation programs
  • Identify and provide documentation of on-site opportunities for energy efficiency in buildings under design and construction; provide follow-up as required to the customers
  • Participate in QA/QC and internal audit activities
  • Analyze building utility bills to determine energy usage trends
  • Ability to promote, sell and influence property managers, owners and maintenance staff to install energy efficiency measures in multifamily dwellings
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations
  • Discuss technical elements of energy consuming equipment in a facility (lighting, HVAC, hot water systems, envelope, integrated design) and how it affects utility consumption and demand, to help build a business case to prioritize recommendations and how they affect savings and first cost
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and databases to determine energy savings and to manage current projects, collaborate with other Energy Advisors/Energy Engineers as required to maximize technical support to the client base
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the program's strategic direction regarding energy efficiency and the business activities of its customers
  • Keeping current on the latest energy-saving technology and how we might incorporate them into our products
  • Collaborating with other Energy Advisors and Energy Engineers to maximize client technical support
  • Serve as a technical resource for Energy Advisors
  • Ensure compliance with all quality and safety policies as well as all OSHA regulations


ADDITIONAL MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support tech leads for large Energy Efficiency and Demand Response programs across the country while growing to handle smaller ones by leveraging/growing your technical knowledge and program experience in various capacities including savings calculations, project reviews, reporting, and application revision.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in core company technology platforms utilized by engineering staff and programs.
  • Work in collaboration with regional operations and technical leads from Shared Engineering Services to complete program project reviews to ensure accuracy of claimed savings under supervision.
  • As requested, and deemed knowledgeable enough, provide team support including peer review of department members' work.
  • Enter and analyze data using excel spreadsheets.
  • Assist in the creation, update, and maintenance of comprehensive documentation of energy savings calculation methodologies and assumptions.
  • Support and maintain energy savings, incentives, and other details within field tools, Excel workbooks, software systems, and customer portals under supervision of more experienced staff.
  • Assist in startup and program operations team work to ensure proper technical support.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining data entry mapping and processes for program operations and central processing teams.
  • Assist in new program launches/startups, expansions and modifications.
  • Develop and maintain a solid foundation of basic energy savings technologies to assist the team and company with related projects.
  • Assist in training material updates and training facilitation as needed within technical competencies in collaboration with the Training & Organizational Development department.
  • Assist in monitoring and research of technology changes or new technologies for department and/or program sharing.
  • Assist in field inspections, assessments, or audits as needed by programs or the Shared Engineering Services team.


Position Requirements

Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university. (Based on the position preferences may include: Mechanical, Civil, Electrical or Industrial Engineering)
  • 1 - 3 years engineering experience related to mechanical design, energy modeling or construction
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in the energy efficiency industry
  • Experience in building design, "green" construction and sustainable design - Preferred
  • Certified Energy Manager and the LEED AP credentials - Preferred
  • CEM or VPI certification - Preferred
  • PE or FE certification or desire to obtain one - Preferred
  • A licensed engineer - Preferred
  • Strong understanding of how systems affect energy consumption
  • Understanding of how building, home, and process systems affect energy consumptions.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills to provide a comprehensive product for use by non-technical staff
  • Must be able to handle a wide variety of work and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be a detail-oriented, organized, self-starter, and have an ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to identify and resolve project issues with program engineers or other staff
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Outlook, Sharepoint, and Powerpoint
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with typical energy efficiency database tracking and operations (ie: Salesforce, eTrack, Energy Orbit)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with customers, clients and internal staff
  • Experience with Technical Reference Manuals, Utility Filings, and/or Evaluations of energy efficiency and demand response programs - Preferred
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and solve practical problems
  • Knowledge of building systems including HVAC, lighting, residential and commercial appliances, and building envelopes
  • Strong mathematical skills including if/then statements, lookups, and other data analytic functions
  • Ability to work well under pressure in time critical situations and be productive and self-motivated
  • Prior energy experience in Commercial, Industrial, Multifamily, or Residential market sectors
