Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Associate Professor in Social Work, Data and Technology to begin September 1, 2025. This unique role involves teaching, research, and service activities at the intersection of social work and data science. The individual who fills this role will have their primary faculty appointment and tenure home in the Department of Social Work and hold a core faculty affiliation with the Institute for Data Research and Innovation Science ( IDRIS).
Candidates should have a record of scholarly publication and/or external funding, experience working with diverse student populations, and social work teaching experience. New faculty members will be expected to maintain an active body of academic research demonstrated through teaching, service and research that incorporates external funding and professional presentations, university service and community engaged scholarship. The successful candidate will have their primary assignment to the Baccalaureate Social Work program. Essential requirements for the appointment include an earned doctorate in social work, an MSW from a CSWE accredited program, and two years post- MSW social work practice experience.
Responsibilities:
Teaching:

  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate courses that integrate data science principles with social work topics.
  • Mentor and supervise students in their academic development, research projects, and theses.
  • Create and foster innovative learning environments that engage students from diverse backgrounds.


Research:

  • Lead a cutting-edge research agenda focused on the application of data, data science methods, and technology (e.g., AI, gaming, virtual reality) to address challenges in social work.
  • Secure external funding through grants and partnerships with educational institutions, government agencies, and industry.
  • Publish research findings in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals and present at leading conferences.

Service:

  • Participate in departmental, institute (i.e., IDRIS), college, and university meetings, committees and initiatives.
  • Engage in data and technology-engaged and data and technology-informed community outreach and collaborations with local organizations, policymakers and other stakeholders.
  • Foster partnerships with social work and technology stakeholders to promote research and community initiatives.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Ph.D. in Social Work or a closely related field.
  • Core data and technology-engaged and data and technology-informed research and practice agenda.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level.
  • Proven track record of research and publications in top-tier journals.
  • Experience in securing and managing research grants.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.



  • Experience with curriculum development and innovative teaching methodologies.
  • Background in interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
  • Professional experience in social work settings, data science, gaming or related domains.
  • Active participation in professional organizations and conferences.
