The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) has overall accountability for professional nursing practice and leadership at Cooley Dickinson Hospital (CDH). This includes overall authority and responsibility for establishing standards of nursing practice, developing and implementing plans for providing high quality and safe nursing care and achieving the best quality outcomes. The CNO is also responsible for creating exceptional patient experience, high staff engagement and positive financial outcomes in all operational areas of responsibility. Areas of direct responsibility include Medical/Surgical & Critical Care Units, Peri-operative Services, Maternal Child Health, Ambulatory Nursing, CDH VNA & Hospice, and other service areas as required. The CNO leads the planning and implementation of the nursing and patient care services strategic plan and ensures alignment with the CDH and Mass General Brigham (MGB) strategic initiatives and goals. The CNO partners with leaders across the organization & system, including the CDH board of trustees, leadership team, medical staff, clinical areas, and the MGB Chief Nurse Council to help drive the best outcomes for patients, families, the team.
This position reports to the CDH President and Chief Operating Officer and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- BS required
- Master's degree in nursing leadership, Business, Hospital Administration, or related field required. If BS is not in Nursing, MS must be in Nursing.
- Doctorate in Nursing (DNP) or PhD preferred
- Current RN licensure for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or ability to obtain licensure by time of hire required
- ANCC Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-BC) board certification preferred
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification required
- Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in nursing leadership required
- Experience in implementing a nursing professional practice model, including shared governance, required
- Demonstrated nursing leadership excellence and positive outcomes in the domains of quality, safety, patient experience, staff engagement and financial performance.

- Collaborate in the development of a strategic direction for the practice of nursing within the organization and implement strategies, systems, and programs that support the achievement of the organization's mission and goals.
- Shape and promote a nursing culture that focuses on care and quality by recognizing excellence in clinical nursing practice, shared decision-making about practice issues and work environment (shared governance), research and theory-based practice, care delivery systems, and human resource management.
- Oversee the development and implementation of organization-wide patient care programs, standards, policies, and procedures that describe how patients' nursing care needs, or patient populations receiving nursing care, are assessed, evaluated, and met.
- Participate and collaborate in the development of system, hospital, and departmental goals in the area of nursing professional practice. Incorporate all relevant goals and objectives of the organization's strategic plans into specific actions for assigned areas of responsibility.
- Develop and implement the organization's plans for providing age-appropriate nursing care to those patients requiring such care at the hospital, in ambulatory or CDH VNA & Hospice.
- Act as a consultant and mentor to create the support and systems necessary for excellence in nursing practice and quality of work life.
- Provide visible leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote recruitment, retention, and recognition of excellence in nursing. This includes engagement with staff and leadership periodically on off shifts and weekends.
- Seek opportunities for recognition of the organization's nursing services.
- Assure continuity and consistency of nursing care across the continuum of care provided by CDH. Develop, support, and participate in programs that enhance the integration of services across the Hospital in support of system objectives.
- Actively participate in committees.
- Identify and articulate the common needs and viewpoints of nurses and other patient care staff to appropriate decision-making groups (Senior Leadership, Medical Group Leadership, Support Services) and communicate the implications of environmental changes at the patient care level to Senior Management. Participate in MGB system-wide efforts including actively participating in the MGB Chief Nurse Council and lead sub-committees and initiatives.
Physician Partnership/Collaboration:
- Coordinate activities and act as a liaison with appropriate medical staff. Interact effectively and develop collaborative relationships with physicians, medical staff committees and medical staff leadership. Serve on various medical staff committees to ensure appropriate communication necessary to fulfill job requirements and to provide administrative representation to ensure achievement of the goals of the organization.
- Develop partnerships with physicians to create a collaborative practice approach to outcomes driven care.
- Include, involve, and engage physicians in all key nursing strategies and implementation plans to develop an atmosphere of trust, collegiality, mutual respect, and shared learning.
- Represent Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) at the medical staff executive committee and review and approve initial and re-credentialing of APNs as part of the credentialing committee process.
Quality Leadership and Process Improvement:
- Identify, model, and provide leadership for quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) in patient care processes within a cost-effective environment.
- Implement corrective action plans for infection control in affected problem areas.
- Ensure that organizational wide performance improvement program and training programs, identified by the Infection Prevention Coordinator, are implemented.
- Oversee the development and implementation of patient care indicators (National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators - NDNQI) that evaluate the status of patient care with action plans to improve care and make practice changes when appropriate.
- Facilitate, coach, encourage, and mentor staff and managers in developing capacity for QAPI.
- Create, develop, and implement strategies to enhance patient care and patient experience. Implement and evaluate strategies and systems that will ensure and improve quality of patient care and level of patient experience in all assigned areas of responsibility.
- Implement an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the clinical quality of nursing care delivered to patients and to monitor QAPI plans.
- Develop, implement, and measure quality standards, patient safety, and customer satisfaction to support the organization's mission.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate organizational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with requirements of regulatory bodies. Implement Joint Commission and state site visits readiness within the assigned departments.
Human Resource Management:
- Participate and provide leadership in identifying strategic nursing staffing needs, changing demographics of professional nurses and challenges in both the short and long term to redesign staffing models that matches supply available.
- Identify skills and competencies required to maintain and enhance quality care and service. Collaborate in developing recruitment, retention, and development strategies to meet identified needs.
- Actively engage in and promote employee relations in all spheres of influence. Ensure staff communication channels are effective, and issues are heard and acted upon with a particular focus in the nursing arena.
- Promote activities and initiatives to recognize the role of nursing in the organization to include support for Nurses Week.
- Act as a member of the negotiating team for the MNA and SEIU contracts.
Financial & Operational Management:
- Lead developing budgets for nursing and patient care services departments based on volume, acuity and state & national benchmarks (NDNQI).
- Monitor and take accountability for budgets in assigned departments.
- Effectively manage assigned resources in a fiscally sound manner.
- Develop and implement strategies to reduce the cost of patient care without compromise to patient safety/clinical outcomes.
- Assist the Senior Team in planning, implementing and leading operations including participating in master facility planning, providing clinical and staff input into designing new or renovated patient care facilities.
- Play a key role in Emergency Preparedness including serving as Incident Commander or other Healthcare Incident Command System Staff positions. In collaboration with the Emergency Preparedness team, participate in Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) and assist with planning and implementing the Emergency Operations Plan.
External and Community Activities:
- Participate in the development and maintenance of a nursing leadership network both locally and nationally with the purpose of identifying areas of common need and potential for joint/coordinated efforts. Represent organization's nursing in local, state, and national arenas as required.
- Participate in community service and educational programs that will enhance the delivery of quality patient care throughout the community and enhance the image of the organization.
- Confer with other hospitals, universities, public organizations, and professional organizations for the purpose of sharing knowledge, skills, and promotion of public relations.
- Participate in professional organizations appropriate to the position.
- Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, safety, compliance, infection control, and environmental standards.
- Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.
- Meet annual competency and retraining requirements. Ensure staff meets annual competency and retraining requirements.
- Attend meetings as required.
