Job Description: BHMG Urgent Care Shelbyville Rd. PRN MA The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care and clinical support within an outpatient clinic. Responsibilities include obtaining vital signs, reconciling medications, collecting patient history, and facilitating patient flow. Additional duties involve managing the electronic health record (EPIC), scheduling appointments, processing medication requests, handling prior authorizations, and coordinating tests and procedures. Upon successful completion of clinical competency, the role may also require performing EKGs, lab tests, injections, and/or phlebotomy. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to ensure efficient patient care and support for providers.
- Patient Assessment & Intake:
- Obtain vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, temperature).
- Collect and review patient medical history, medication reconciliation, and preferred pharmacy information.
- Assist healthcare providers during examinations and minor procedures within scope of practice.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and injections as directed by provider.
- Perform EKGs, PFTs, spirometry, nebulizer treatments, ear irrigations, phlebotomy and other approved procedures.
- Conduct point of care tests, including glucose testing, strep screens, pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and HgA1c, as directed by the provider.
- Ensure patient documentation is prepared for provider review.
- Facilitate patient flow by rooming patients promptly.
- Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms.
- Update and manage electronic medical records.
Upon hire, all Medical Assistants will undergo a clinical competency assessment and must successfully complete MA orientation. Those who do not meet the required standards will be enrolled in the Medical Assistant (MA) Trainee Program for further development and reevaluation.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a medical office, clinic, or similar setting is required. This experience must include direct, hands-on patient care in a clinical setting, such as obtaining manual vital signs, documenting patient history and medications, and performing clinical procedures (e.g., EKGs, phlebotomy, administering injections or vaccines). A combination of relevant experience and formal medical-related education may be considered to meet this requirement.
- Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.
- Must obtain AHA BLS within 90 days of hire.
- **BAT and DOT certifications required for Medical Assistants in Occupational Medicine within 90 days of hire**
Preferred Requirements for Certified Medical Assistant:
- Current MA Certification from AAMA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, AAMP.
- Basic computer skills, specifically with navigating within databases containing highly confidential information.
