Below, you'll find other important information about this position. This position maintains the andrology laboratory according to CAP and CLIA standards. The primary duty is to interact with patients and perform laboratory testing of semen. Excellent laboratory skills are required, especially in the areas of semen analysis, preparation of sperm for IUI, TDI or ART procedures and sperm freezing. This position is part of a small team that functions to provide services in embryology, andrology and hormone analyses, all of which the andrology technologist should be able to perform. The incumbent must be well-organized as they maintain the laboratory database, appropriate logs and patient records and are responsible for the day-to-day functions of the andrology laboratory. The incumbent must possess excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology, chemistry, physical science or biology from an accredited institution

2. Must possess or be eligible to obtain a West Virginia Laboratory License

3. Must maintain the WV Laboratory License with at least 10.0 contact hours of CEU/year

EXPERIENCE:

1. Must have documented competency in areas of work to obtain laboratory license

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. West Virginia Laboratory License - Full license, not a trainee

EXPERIENCE:

1. Prior experience with andrology procedures. This includes semen analysis, anti-sperm antibody testing and handling of cryopreserved specimens.

2. Prior laboratory experience with use of general laboratory equipment, especially automated equipment and microscopes.

3. Exceptional communication skills and reliability

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Assists the Chief Andrology technologist in maintaining the andrology laboratory in accordance with all CAP and CLIA guidelines

2. Performs all andrology laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures

3. Orders and maintains inventory and equipment in the andrology laboratory

4. Performs patient testing and must be proficient inallaspects of semen analysis, preparation of sperm for IUI, TDI and ART procedures, and sperm freezing. Additional related laboratory testing of sperm may also be required: such as sperm viability testing, fructose testing, anti-sperm antibody testing.

5. Reports patient data once testing is completed using an electronic medical system

6. Works in conjunction with physicians, the clinic manager and other clinic personnel to organize patient procedures and patient flow through the laboratory

7. Maintains laboratory database, patient accession logs, reagent logs, laboratory, and patient records

8. Converses with physicians about results of semen analyses and answers questions related to laboratory techniques as applicable

9. Supervises any students in the andrology laboratory

10. Assists in the embryology and reproductive endocrine laboratories as needed. This includes running hormone assays on automated machinery.

11. Responsible for the maintenance of all dewars containing cryopreserved semen specimens and related patient records

12. Works regular weekend and holiday rotation in addition to covering emergency services (i.e. alarm call for equipment failure) when needed.

13. Demonstrates flexibility to meet the needs of the clinic in regard to changes in work volume, planned change, scheduling changes and emergency call-backs (i.e. weather, disaster or alarm system)

14. Maintains confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers and the public regarding demographic and clinical information. Complies with Notices of Privacy Practices, and the Patient's Rights and Responsibilities

15. Complies with annual competency requirements related to emergency preparedness, hazards, blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, infection control, electrical/fire safety, material safety data sheets and any other topic deemed appropriate to assigned work areas

16. Interacts with patients to explain testing procedures and instructions for appropriate specimen collection
