Position Summary

The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is a federally funded scholarship program seeking highly motivated, responsible, trustworthy, and enthusiastic individuals with the ability to provide a strong work ethic, initiative, display organization, and positively influence CAMP scholars for the academic year 2025-2026. The selected candidates will have strong interpersonal communication skills, own a strong interest in diversity and student service, and aid with creating, developing, and planning activities pertinent to the success of the CAMP scholars. Peer Leaders will aid CAMP scholars in becoming acclimated to the University of New Mexico and help them learn study skills; Peer Leaders will be expected to serve as role models for incoming first-year students. Peer Leaders are expected to work in a fast-paced team environment, aiding advisors with scholars' academic progress, attending meetings conducive to the program's needs, being knowledgeable in freshman-level courses, participating in program trainings and activities, maintaining office space, and gaining experience in all areas of day-to-day operations.

CAMP offers flexible work schedules with a range of 10-15 hours per week, with some mandatory evening and weekend hours during cultural events. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, including intermittent or regular front desk coverage. Must be able to work on Fridays. One-hour shifts will not be possible. The position commitment is for one academic year with the possibility of rehire based on eligibility and program needs. If selected for this position, mandatory requirements include a 3-day group training, department orientation and prep week, mandatory attendance at Fall Orientation for the incoming CAMP cohort, and mandatory recurring student staff meetings (dates and times to be announced during the interview process).

Fall Peer Leader Training: Aug 6-8, 2025
Student Fall Orientation: Aug 14-15, 2025
CAMPing trip: Sept 13-14, 2025
Spring Training: Jan 23, 2025
Spring Orientation: Jan 24, 2026
Final event: May 1, 2026


Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2.8 overall GPA
  • Work-study eligible and awarded
  • Strong GPA in Math and/or English courses
  • At least a sophomore standing as of Fall 2025 semester
  • Ability to work under general supervision
  • Ability to delegate tasks to complete projects
  • Possess the following qualities: public speaking, attentive listener, ability to follow through on requests, work well under pressure, fast thinker, and problem solver, demonstrate critical and creative skills, positive attitude, ability to facilitate group activities.
  • Ability to use social media to promote, disseminate, and celebrate CAMP-related activities, students, and accomplishments

Preferences

  • CAMP Alumni
  • Campus involvement or knowledge about the UNM Main campus and various student resources.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish)
  • One to three years of experience directly related to the duties of tutoring and mentoring
