About the Role

As a Strategic Intelligence Reporting Lead on OpenAI's Intelligence and Investigations team, you will craft compelling, high-impact narratives that spotlight how advanced AI tools and systems disrupt misuse and abuse across the online ecosystem. Your work will bring to life the cases, stories, and signals uncovered by our threat investigators and analysts-transforming complex safety operations into powerful public reporting, partner briefings, and executive communications.

This role is ideal for exceptional communicators who blend storytelling mastery, visual design skills, and editorial precision to elevate mission-driven work. You'll help shape and frame how we communicate threats and mitigations-working across investigations, legal, global affairs, and policy-to ensure accuracy, resonance, and impact. From in-depth case reports to public disclosures and partner briefings, your work will serve as a key lever in advancing OpenAI's goal of fostering a safer digital ecosystem.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Work alongside investigators, analysts, and legal partners to develop narrative-driven case studies that communicate our most important findings to the public, government, and industry stakeholders.

  • Design and deliver polished written reports, slides, and visualizations leveraging OpenAI's tech that translate complex abuse investigations into actionable and accessible stories.

  • Ensure all communications are rigorous, legally sound, and strategically framed-helping shape OpenAI's public safety posture and contribution to global trust and safety efforts.

  • Support and coach teammates to elevate the narrative and design quality of their work, ensuring our safety mission is communicated with clarity, creativity, and care.

  • Contribute to a growing portfolio of safety and intelligence publications, including threat actor case studies, public disclosures and safety product briefs.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 7+ years of experience in strategic communications, journalism, editorial, policy writing, or safety-related storytelling roles in technology, government, or journalism.

  • Are an exceptional writer and editor, able to distill complex topics into compelling prose and succinct visuals for expert and general audiences alike.

  • Possess strong visual storytelling and slide design skills-comfortable turning briefs into clean, narrative-driven decks with sharp framing and polished aesthetics.

  • Demonstrate editorial judgment and an ability to work collaboratively with legal and investigations teams to ensure clarity, precision, and compliance.

  • Have a deep interest in the intersection of technology, safety, and online harm-and a passion for making complex stories resonate with the world.

  • Are mission-driven and detail-oriented, with a high bar for quality and an ability to elevate the communications of an entire team.
