Your opportunity

The Telemetry Platform group at New Relic builds the platform and foundational services for secure, automated, reliable, and dynamic ingestion and processing of streaming telemetry data. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you'll guide engineers that are in charge of a critical part of our Full Stack Observability products.

You will join a team that is an integral part of almost every line of business at New Relic. Balancing the needs of internal and external stakeholders while moving forward with your own initiatives takes finely tuned negotiation skills, risk/reward analysis as well as a can-do, positive attitude.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead teams of engineers in designing, developing, and optimizing cutting-edge telemetry systems that power real-time data solutions for Full Stack Observability. In this role, you will oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle of telemetry products, from concept to deployment, ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, drive technical strategy, and mentor engineering talent to deliver innovative solutions that align with our mission to be the world's greatest observability platform.

What you'll do



  • Leadership Skills: Manage and mentor teams of 15-17 engineers, including software, hardware, and systems specialists, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence. Engagement and managing with positivity and empathy is a critical success factor. Advocates and aides in problem solving for the team.
  • Project Oversight: Direct the planning, execution, and delivery of telemetry projects, ensuring they meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards. Oversee multiple concurrent initiatives, from prototype to production.
  • Technical Strategy: Define and implement the engineering roadmap for telemetry systems, including data acquisition, transmission, and processing technologies. Anticipate industry trends to keep solutions ahead of the curve.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product managers, technical architects, and business leaders to align engineering efforts with customer needs and company goals. Act as a technical liaison with external stakeholders, including clients and vendors. Communicates technical complexity with ease to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Managing Upward: Proactively manages upward communication and escalations, ensuring leadership is informed of critical issues, risks, and progress while driving timely resolution of blockers.
  • Process Improvement: Establish and refine engineering processes, including uptime SLA improvements, agile methodologies, on-call support rotations, improvements to enhance team productivity and product reliability, keeping operational paranoia as top priority.
  • Talent Development: Recruit top-tier engineering talent, provide career growth opportunities, and conduct performance evaluations to build a high-performing team.
  • Risk Management: Identify technical risks in telemetry system development (e.g., data integrity, security, scalability) and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Innovation: Drive research and development efforts to explore new telemetry technologies, such as advanced sensors, wireless protocols, or cloud-based analytics platforms.




This role requires



  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years of engineering experience in technologies such as Java, C++, AWS/Azure, Kafka in multi-cloud environments. Other nice-to-have technologies include Rust, Go, GraphQL and some smaller scale databases.
  • 7+ years in a leadership role managing technical teams using scrum-agile. Proven track record in telemetry, IoT, or real-time streaming data systems development with high reliability, fault tolerance built in.
  • Experience with observability platforms, New Relic, DataDog, Dynatrace, Splunk or Elastic.



Bonus points if you have



  • Project management, Scrum/Agile/SAFE framework experience in an enterprise setting
  • Experience with operating in a public cloud with multi-cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP, Private Cloud)
  • Experience with continuous delivery, devops principles and DORA metrics

The pay range below represents a reasonable estimate of salary for the listed position. This role may be eligible for the corporate bonus plan. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related factors such as an applicant's skills, qualifications, and experience.
