What to Expect
As a Die Shop Metallurgist, you will play a key role in supporting our team in the production of Tesla's high-pressure die casting (HPDC) dies. You will be responsible for material selection, processing development, analysis, and validation as it related to die materials. You will oversee the heat treatment and surface treament processes to fine-tune the material properties for HPDC dies.

What You'll Do
  • Subject matter expert for metallurgy in the Die Shop
  • Collaboration with die design and tooling engineers on selection of ideal materials and processes
  • Collaboration with manufacturing engineers on establishment of repair processes for die cast inserts and machining tools
  • Material process optimization and validation to ensure maximized equipment utilization and high quality of parts
  • Specification and procedure development for material processes in additive manufacturing, heat treatment, welding, and coating
  • Drive root cause analysis and innovation projects related to Die Shop material development
  • Material testing and characterization

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, with a strong focus on materials processing and application, or equivalent experience
  • Strong knowledge in physical metallurgy, mechanical behavior of materials, and phase transformations
  • Knowledge of process-structure-property relationships and manufacturing processes as it relates to tool steels
  • Experience in thermal processing of steel
  • Experience conducting material property testing and microstructural characterization
  • Experience in material selection and process development
  • Working knowledge of wrought and additive steel material from raw material to finish form
  • Working knowledge of non-destructive test methodologies and their applications (penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current, x-ray, etc.)
