Description

Job Summary:

As an Accounting Clerk I, you are responsible for assisting with the preparation, filing, and reconciliation of sales tax returns to ensure compliance with state and local tax regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills and a keen eye for accuracy.

Essential Functions:



  • Prepare and submit accurate sales tax returns for multiple jurisdictions.
  • Ensure timely payment of sales tax obligations to avoid penalties.
  • Maintain and update sales tax exemption certificates and records.
  • Reconcile sales tax transactions and payments with accounting records.
  • Gather and provide necessary documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Assist with responding to audit inquiries and requests from tax authorities.
  • Monitor changes in sales tax laws and regulations.
  • Research taxability of products and services in various states or regions.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to sales tax filings and payments.
  • Work with internal teams to correct tax calculation errors.
  • Respond to tax-related inquiries from internal departments and external agencies.
  • Collaborate with the finance and accounting teams to ensure tax compliance.
  • Assist in developing and improving tax compliance processes.
  • Suggest enhancements to sales tax software and reporting tools.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of Sales Tax Regulations: Understanding of state and local sales tax laws, compliance requirements, and filing procedures.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong accuracy in data entry, tax calculations, and record-keeping to ensure compliance and prevent errors.
  • Proficiency in Accounting Software: Experience with Microsoft Excel and Avalara tax software for reporting and reconciliation.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to research tax issues, resolve discrepancies, and interpret tax regulations effectively.
  • Time Management: Capability to manage multiple tax filing deadlines and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to clearly communicate with internal teams and tax authorities regarding compliance matters and audits.


Minimum Requirements:



  • High School Diploma or GED, Associate's degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or tax compliance.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Understanding of sales tax regulations and general accounting principles.
  • Strong accuracy in data entry, tax calculations, and record-keeping.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal teams and tax authorities regarding compliance and documentation.
