Position Summary: Under the direction of the Division Fleet and Maintenance Manager, this position plans, coordinates and directs the maintenance of trucking operations; establishes maintenance standards, develops equipment specifications, manages tire program and assists in all maintenance personnel issues; bringing together uniform maintenance and safety procedures while controlling total equipment expenses.

Dimensions: Individual will build and maintain a stable base of acceptable vendors to guarantee a competitive quality source for the Division and other PCA needs for equipment and maintenance services. This includes vendor selection, negotiating procurement decisions (pricing, freight, terms of payment, etc.), and problem resolutions. Advisor to other PCA operations on equipment specifications. Provides assistance to Boise Cascade regarding equipment specifications and maintenance schedules (via a Services Agreement).

Principle Accountabilities:



  • Reviews computer data by component, i.e., brake lining, electrical systems, emission systems, etc. Watches for out of control expenses and discusses these issues with terminal managers and shop personnel. Research ways to control those costs by reducing excessive labor hours or by using different parts.
  • Evaluates test materials by sampling products on groups of vehicles comparing one against the other. Works with suppliers and OEM 's on ways to improve these products and reduced our equipment cost per mile.
  • Advises terminal managers of upcoming Federal Highway regulations and environmental issues. Follows through on each phase regulation and issues deadlines assures deadlines are met for compliance. Works with fleet safety on company and owner operator inspections.
  • Reviews prices paid for parts, tires, wheels, etc., as well as outside work and advises terminals of overages and overcharges. Negotiates adjustments from suppliers on part and labor.
  • Know and follow policies and procedures of the company, share information that would benefit other members of the team and find ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.
  • Strive to continually strengthen PCA's business philosophy of meeting needs and exceeding expectation for customers specifically supporting PCA's Commitment to Service which involves doing what's right for our customers, focusing on strategies that add value and support growth, and keeping the promises that we make.


Decision Making:



  • Discusses maintenance related problems with company shops and outside shops contractors to perform work for trucking. Approves maintenance repairs for trucks and trailers. Talks about type of repair, is the repair necessary, what can be done to correct the problem. If PM repairs are being performed on schedule, can repairs be extended?
  • Advises terminal managers on which parts to purchase for the lowest cost per mile, negotiates national account road purchase prices and volume purchases.
  • Guides Division Fleet and Maintenance Manager and Terminal Managers on deciding what equipment should be repaired. Decisions are based on NBV, mileage, overall condition, etc.
  • Assists Driver Services with issuing/ activating fuel cards and setting up trucks with Samsara cameras and Omnitracs elogs. Will help drivers with login process and troubleshooting.
  • Driver Services tasks as agreed to by Sr Manager/General Manager/Driver Services Manager and Division Fleet and Maintenance Manager.


Position Requirements:



  • High school, vocational school in diesel and equipment maintenance. Some college level credit preferred.
  • Prefer experience a shop lead/foreman, service manager, or fleet manager.
  • Must have knowledge of equipment specifications for both tractors and trailers.
  • Requires excellent communication, analytical and statistical skills.
  • Travel is required up to 25%
