Position Summary

The CPS Energy Internship Program is designed to meet the industry's rapidly changing workforce needs by providing local San Antonio high school students with public utility career experience. Through the internship program students are paired with a mentor to acquire meaningful hands-on experience that expands their understanding of how the industry works and exposes them to essential skills they must acquire or develop to be successful. The internship is not only meant for the intern to learn how to perform, but to also understand the rationale behind the strategies that are being used.

The Weatherization Program is an internship designed to provide high school juniors and seniors who are interested in potentially pursuing a career in Energy Efficiency with an opportunity to obtain a fundamental knowledge of the physical, academic, and practical skills required for a successful career. Interns are assigned to an experienced Weatherization Auditor with technical duties in Energy Efficiency, including calibration of CO test equipment, operation of blower door and test equipment, health and safety checks at customer's homes, and evaluation of homes for the Casa Verde program. All team members will serve an Instructor, Safety Enforcer, Role Model, and Mentor, providing an optimal hands-on and safe learning experience.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Must report to assigned worksite Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (5-day work week)
  • The intern will attend and participate in a 2-day training program.
  • Attend daily Safety Tailboard meetings and perform stretching exercises.
  • Intern will become familiar with general safety information and understand hazards associated with Casa Verde Weatherization work, equipment uses and calibration.
  • The intern will learn the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the Safety Guidelines that must be followed to ensure overall job safety.
  • Intern will learn how to identify tools and equipment used in Weatherization.
  • Intern will learn how to use all hand tools and how to audit and inspect a home for Weatherization.
  • Responsible for cleaning tools, equipment, materials, and specified work areas as needed.
  • Report to assigned Auditor.
  • Intern will perform fewer complex duties.
  • Intern Weatherization performs technical duties in Weatherization audits, including operation and use of CO detector, moisture meter, blower door test equipment, writing reports, entering reports into systems, creating, and participating in training sessions with the team for Casa Verde contractors.
  • Assist Auditor with keeping job site clean and free of any hazards.
  • Intern must be able tolift 40 lbs., climb stairs and ladders as needed.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate for an intern

Minimum Skills
Personal Computer Usage
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Must be a current high school student.
Must be a minimum age of 16.
Must reside within 120 miles of CPS Energy Headquarters.
Ability to work in a team environment, coordinating with other areas to achieve goals and objectives.
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills for interaction with all levels of personnel.
Basic analytical skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail, and scheduling.
Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrate an interest in a career applicable to the utility industry.
Participate in full-time employment with CPS Energy.
Attend all activities sponsored by CPS Energy during employment.
Pass a drug test and background screen prior to employment with CPS Energy.
