Special Collections & University Archives houses the Libraries' most unique and rarest items from the 12th century to present day. The department's diverse subject areas include African Americana, Artists' Papers, Book Arts & Typography, Botany, Caribbean West Indies, Civil War, Floridiana, Literary Papers, Political Papers, the Space Program, and Travel and Tourism as well as the history of the University of Central Florida/Florida Technological University. Holdings include monographs, manuscripts, maps, photographs, ephemera, moving images, audio recordings, artifacts, and fine art. The department's new gallery space showcases our unique collections through rotating themed exhibitions.

The Opportunity:

UCF University Libraries is now accepting applications for an Archivist within Special Collections & University Archives! Working independently under the general supervision of the department head, the Special Collections & University Archives Archivist oversees accessioning, arranging, describing, and maintaining the department's manuscript and archival holdings consisting of all media types (records, manuscripts, audio-visual, photographs, print material, born-digital, art, etc.) using appropriate software including ArchivesSpace and Alma. The Archivist is responsible for creating and maintaining electronic location tools that aid in storing and retrieving the department's holdings. The position also provides reference service and research assistance for the collections and hires and trains student workers, interns, and volunteers working with department holdings.

Responsibilities:


  • Manages the highly specialized accessioning process for departmental special collection and archival holdings. Sets processing priorities in consultation with the department head. Appraises, surveys, processes, arranges, and describes manuscript and archival collections to complex professional standards. Creates appropriate finding aids, including EAD markup, and performs appropriate preservation functions.

  • Oversees and manages the department's use of ArchivesSpace and Alma. Creates and maintains electronic tools to manage the retrieval and storage of department resources. Manages department monograph, serial, print, and ephemeral holdings.

  • Trains, coordinates, and oversees students, interns, and volunteers working with department holdings.

  • Provides reference services, instruction sessions, and training to university faculty, staff, students, and the public. Assists with duplication, reproduction, and publication requests. Engages in outreach activities, contributes to the department website and social media accounts, and curates, designs, and installs exhibits.

  • Works with cataloging department coordinating cataloging of department materials.


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in processing manuscript/archival collections, including in arrangement, description, and online access using professional standards.

  • Experience working with ArchivesSpace, including accessioning, and creating and publishing finding aids and knowledge or experience with EAD, XML, and other metadata schemas.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with current standards for manuscript and archival description such as DACS and RDA.

  • Knowledge of a wide range of collection formats found in special collections and archives including manuscript collections, organizational records, digital holdings, rare books, and artifacts.

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, Museum Studies, or other applicable subjects.

  • Degree or coursework in library science or archival studies.
