We are looking for a Data Science Expert Team Director to lead and enable a high-performing, ever-advancing team of data science professionals. Recognized as a subject matter expert, the Data Science Expert Team Director oversees the development and execution of strategies that ensure both the personal growth of team members and the advancement of data science expertise across JBS. In collaboration with leadership from JBS Practice Areas, Business Development, Corporate Communications, Finance, and Human Resources, the Data Science Expert Team Director will drive innovation and excellence in data analytics and related disciplines. Given the central role this position plays, strong expertise in data science is crucial, as is the ability to mentor and develop staff across a broad range of expertise to synthesize complex quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources. The Data Science Expert Team Director will champion a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing to enhance JBS's overall analytical capabilities.

Essential job functions

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to data science professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to create, refine, and advance the strategic direction for data science, ensuring alignment with evolving best practices, industry trends, and organizational goals.
  • Oversee the onboarding, retention, and professional development of top data science talent. Establish growth paths and learning opportunities to retain and elevate skilled professionals.
  • Lead management of staff resources within data science, overseeing and ensuring that the right people are assigned to the right tasks/projects, resources are utilized efficiently, and the Expert Team operates efficiently to achieve organizational goals and high project performance.
  • Work cross-functionally with other Expert Team Directors to ensure efficient resource sharing and alignment.
  • Coordinate the dissemination, advancement, and expansion of data science expertise in partnership with JBS Corporate Communications Office and Business Development Center.
  • Oversee management and attainment of employee performance goals, ensuring clear quarterly goals are set and progress is tracked against both individual and organizational goals.
  • Ensure employees have access to necessary tools, technology, and support to perform their roles effectively.
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive environment that prioritizes the well-being of all JBS employees. Collaborate cross-functionally to create initiatives and programs that promote employee engagement.
  • Measure, analyze, and report key employee utilization and engagement metrics to leadership.
  • As assigned, act as technical lead for data science projects, ensuring successful delivery of JBS capabilities.
  • Directly supervises up to 8 senior staff, with indirect oversight of a team of 30-60 employees.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field to data science such as Economics, Quantitative Sociology, Statistics, Public Health, or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years' related experience
  • Experience managing a large team of professional staff
  • Experience developing professional talent and managing performance outcomes.

Knowledge

  • Substantive subject matter expertise in data science, machine learning, AI, and related areas.
  • Excellent leadership and mentorship abilities.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data-driven decision-making and performance metrics.
  • Knowledge of Government contracting and related performance expectations.

LOCATION: North Bethesda or San Mateo JBS Office preferred. Remote potential for the right candidate.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: May vary based upon assignment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or computer workstation.
  • Regularly uses a computer, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Normal or corrected vision to read documents, view computer screens, and perform tasks that require visual accuracy.
  • Ability to hear and understand spoken information in person and over the phone.
  • Minimal lifting and carrying may be required, typically light office supplies or documents.
  • Ability to move within the office environment to access equipment, files, and interact with colleagues.
  • Ability to handle occasional stress related to deadlines, workloads, or challenging tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience applying data science methodologies within a State/Federal environment.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and ethical considerations in data science applications.
