Job Summary

The Lab Research Supervisor 1 position will be in the Biomarker Core Laboratory at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. The role of the Supervisor will be to lead and oversee the daily operations of our laboratory in addition to performing biomarker measurements for multiple studies.

They will be responsible for not only performing assays for multiple research studies for multiple research labs but will also be responsible for creating workflows to ensure biomarker measurements are accomplished within the given timeframe of a particular project. They will also be responsible for managing lab staff, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, maintaining equipment, and overseeing the quality and accuracy of experiments and tests conducted. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a thorough understanding of laboratory procedures, and a commitment to promoting a safe and efficient work environment.

THE LRS 1 will organize and perform various types of assays for research protocols within the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). They will independently perform standard and a specialized laboratory procedures in accordance to established SOPs in the lab with the support of the Lab Manager for novel analyses. The LRS 1 will support the laboratory in monitoring and ordering laboratory supplies as needed, oversee the maintenance of lab equipment and maintaining and monitoring the status of stored samples. The LRS 1 will independently request and review quotes from vendors, order necessary reagents and kits and create budgets for upcoming analyses in a timely manner. They will coordinate shipments from the MWCCS central repository and ship out samples as needed to outside labs. They will perform quality control of data, coordinating with and reviewing other lab workers' results and provide results to the requesting PIs. They will lead the training of new lab research assistants and summer interns, as well as oversee the assignments of lab work to ensure efficient completion of analyses.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $126,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM), the largest department in the School of Medicine, has close to 600 full- time faculty leading top-notch research, clinical, and education programs. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, ZSFG, SFVAHCS and Mt. Zion) and 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rests with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites, and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and SFVAHCS sites.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry or related area.
  • 3 or more years' experience in a laboratory setting
  • One or more years of experience with laboratory management, including staff supervision, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with laboratory equipment and processes.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory management software and tools (e.g., LIMS, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines. (e.g., OSHA, GLP, ISO)
  • Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
  • Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space.
  • Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree.
  • Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
