DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of the largest and most complex departments on campus. The department is comprised of over 60 ladder rank faculty, over 400 additional academics in various research and instructional titles, and over40 professional staff. Almost 1,400 students are enrolled in the undergraduate program and over 1,000 students are enrolled in the Department's graduate education program (~300 PhD and over 700 MS students).

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, the incumbent uses professional engineering concepts to assist Advanced Robotics and Controls Laboratory (ARClab) members in the daily operation of the laboratory. S/he will be the primary contact with vendors to acquire and set up roboticequipment and assist in their qualification and calibration. Performs routine maintenance procedures for instrumentation for the algorithm development, fabrication and testing of devices used in areas of robotics covered by ARClab. Collaborates with a team of researchers andengineers to design, develop, and implement innovative robotic systems and technologies. Duties include participating in meetings and speaking to project sponsors, preparing manuscripts and presentations of research, attending and presenting as needed the research at researchmeetings or conferences. The engineer will also assist with the maintenance of financial and administrative, computer based files and databases. Provide general assistance to support operation of the ARClab.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions.

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. Demonstrated skills and knowledge in robotic systems and algorithms.

  • Working knowledge of robotics, machine learning, and controls principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.

  • Skill in creating and maintaining computer databases for easy retrieval of information.

  • Ability to train and supervise student workers. Ability to organize work schedules and procedures and to communicate effectively with a variety of personnel.

  • Strong computer skills using various applications including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Internet and E-mail. Experience creating graphs, charts, spreadsheets and related documents.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard laboratory safety policies and procedures.

  • Ability to generate and maintain effective, clearly written Standard Operating Procedures for facility equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience to work safely with handling chemicals and hazardous materials.

  • Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with a large number of students, coworkers, researchers, faculty and external users using the laboratories and associated equipment

  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.

  • Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

  • Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate with a wide variety of people; ability to communicate with a diverse group of people in a helpful, effective and informative manner, demonstrating tact and diplomacy; skill in expressing oneself verbally and in writing; knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

  • Skill to prioritize and problem solve with meticulous attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,800 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.56 - $53.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
