Overview

The AVP, Underwriting roll oversees underwriting of workers' compensation and core commercial package clients in the West Region. The role provides leadership and management for staff consisting of Managers, Supervisors, Underwriters, and Underwriting Assistants who are responsible for underwriting, review, and placement of risk with AmTrust, focused on those generating more than $25,000 in premium including complex middle market and large workers' compensation accounts. This individual is responsible for the profitable growth of the portfolio. Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.



Responsibilities

    Provides mentoring to their team of underwriters and guidance for their professional development
  • Accountable for achieving core operating income, real growth objectives and maintaining quality of business
  • Ensures that team adheres to company guidelines and standards regarding risk acceptability
  • Manages the selection and denial of new and/or renewal business including management of pricing targets, renewal retention targets and profitability targets.
  • Ensures that underwriting decisions are monitored through regular audits and address issues as appropriate individually or through group training.
  • Working in tandem with sales leadership and management; builds, maintains, and improves producer relationships through responsive engagement, market visibility, and solutions-oriented underwriting.
  • Manages and monitors all stages of underwriting execution.
  • Creates and distributes management reports detailing various functions and status on a monthly basis.
  • Travel as needed to perform agency visits or to attend company and industry meetings
  • Keeps current with market trends and demands.
  • Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required:

* Bachelor's degree

* 10+ years of experience successfully leading and supervising staff

* Demonstrated effective management and leadership skills

* Thorough knowledge of property/casualty underwriting and demonstrated track record in building a profitable portfolio

* Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others

* Extensive knowledge of NCCI, ISO, and State regulations relating to insurance

* Strong understanding of underwriting best practices and ability to apply same

* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

* Strong organizational, analytical, and interpretive skills

* Ability to effectively multi-task and work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

* Ability to collaborate, "think outside the box" and make sound decisions to resolve complex matters

* Ability to travel and work outside normal business hours

The salary range for this role is $155,000 - $200,000/year. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California. Base pay offered may vary depending on, but not limited to education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics. This range may be modified in the future.
