The School of Arts and Sciences (

Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Department within the School of Arts and Sciences. This position will under supervision of lab head and PhD scientists, perform a variety of tasks devoted to prepare and manage stocks of growth media for the C. elegans genetics model.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work.
- Sterile media preparation to support efforts of two C. elegans research labs.
- Handles inventory and order supplies for C. elegans and bacterial growth media.
- C. elegans strain collection management.
- Assists in C. elegans stock freezing, cataloging, mailing.
- Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
- Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
- Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- A high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
- An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- A practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- The ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.

Preferred Qualifications |
- A BA or equivalent in life sciences, including biochemistry, biology, genetics, or molecular genetics.
- 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting emphasizing precision in media preparation, ability to work in a dedicated team, strong critical thinking and ability to work with independence after some guidance.
- Related lab experience.
- Experience in the culture and maintenance of C. elegans.
- Knowledge of supply inventory management, sterile technique, media preparation, and C. elegans strain collection management.
