Position Overview
The University of Kansas Upward Bound programs are federally funded TRIO programs that work with first-generation and low-income college-bound students (rising 9th - rising 12th graders) in Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties with the goal of increasing the rate at which students complete high school and graduate from college. The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year. Students share a room in a university residence hall with other participants and interact with instructors and residence hall advisors through taking five academic classes, have support finishing homework with the help of tutors.

Non-Bridge Residential Positions:

Staff Orientation dates: May 29 - 30, 2025
Anticipated start and end dates: June 1 - July 11, 2025
Residential Component dates: June 8 - July 3, 2025

The Upward Bound Program Non-Bridge Summer Institute Resident Assistant will live in a residence hall, supervise, and serve as a role model to approximately 50-65 high school students who are participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. Each Non-Bridge Resident Assistant is assigned a group of 10-15 students but is responsible for supervising every student. The Non-Bridge Resident Assistants are required to reside in the designated residence hall with the Upward Bound students for the duration of the appointment and maintain 24-hour residency five days a week for six weeks. This position reports directly to the Residence Hall Director.

Bridge Residential Position:

Staff Orientation dates: May 29 - 30, 2025
Anticipated start and end dates: June 1 - July 3, 2025
Residential Component dates: June 1 - July 3, 2025

The Upward Bound Program Bridge Summer Institute Resident Assistant will live in a residence hall, supervise, and serve as a role model to approximately 10-15 incoming college freshmen who are participating in the Upward Bound Bridge Summer Institute. The Bridge Resident Assistant is required to reside in the designated residence hall with the Upward Bound Bridge students for the duration of the appointment and maintain 24-hour residency six days a week for four weeks. There is an optional fifth week that will be performed virtually. This position reports directly to the Residence Hall Director.

These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments.

Job Description
30% Foster Community Development:
  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with students, permanent staff, and fellow staff members
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with all students
  • Establish an atmosphere that appreciates all student identities, cultures, and beliefs
  • Assist in planning, leading, and implementing educational and social activities for students during free time
  • Attend and participate in all program sponsored events

30% Supervision:
  • Assist in monitoring students' arrival and technology check out on Sunday afternoons and departure and technology check in on Thursday evenings
  • Ensure all participants are up and ready for class each morning
  • Transport, lead, and/or accompany students to and from activities
  • Escort students to Watkins Health Center due to illness
  • Be assigned a group of students but ultimately responsible for all students
  • Supervise students during meals, activities, free time, and other times as needed

15% Academic and Social Support:
  • Provide individual or group tutoring to improve subject material understanding and ensure completion of homework
  • Build a community conducive to academic success (e.g. encourage study groups, enforce quiet hours)
  • Prioritize academics over social activities
  • Understand university support services and refer students when necessary (Bridge Resident Assistant)

15% Policy Enforcement:
  • Model and enforce all university, housing, and program policies
  • Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations
  • Document all policy violations consistently
  • Report any inappropriate student behavior and/or violations to policies to appropriate staff

10% Administration:
  • Complete all administrative tasks fully and punctually. Tasks include but are not limited to submitting incident reports, facility service requests, answering emails, completing medical claims forms.
  • Always maintain sensitive student information
  • Read and respond to all communication, stay up to date on change in schedules
  • Be aware of facilities needs and enter Service Requests promptly for any facility related issues
  • Must attend training prior to program and weekly staff meetings as required
  • Be flexible and willing to do other duties as assigned

Position Requirements
This position is on-site at the University of Kansas Lawrence campus.A valid driver's license is required.

Required Qualifications
NOTE: The Non-Bridge Resident Assistant is required to maintain 24-hour residency, 5 days a week (Sunday-Thursday) for six weeks.

Non-Bridge Residential Positions - 6-week residential summer institute
  1. Completed at least one year of college
  2. Valid Driver's license

NOTE: The Bridge Resident Assistant is required to maintain 24-hour residency, 6 days a week (Sunday-Friday) for four weeks.

Bridge Residential Position - 4-week residential summer institute
  1. At least two years of college
  2. Valid Driver's license

Preferred Qualifications
Non-Bridge Residential Positions- 6-week residential summer institute
  1. Experience with a wide variety of high school students
  2. Experience with conflict resolution
  3. Tutoring experience
  4. Experience coordinating and supervising group living experiences in a team focused work environment
  5. Have effective communication skills, as demonstrated in application materials
  6. Possess good organizational skills, as demonstrated in application materials
  7. Must be self-disciplined and team-work oriented, as demonstrated in application materials.
  8. Previous TRIO (E.g. Upward Bound) Program experience
  9. Previous experience with college residence hall policies and procedures
Bridge Residential Position-4-week residential summer institute
  1. Have Junior level standing with an undergraduate college or university program
  2. Experience with a wide variety of high school students
  3. Experience with conflict resolution
  4. Tutoring experience
  5. Experience coordinating and supervising group living experiences in a team-focused work environment
  6. Have effective communication and organizational skills, as demonstrated in application materials
  7. Previous TRIO (e.g. Upward Bound) Program experience
  8. Previous experience with college residence hall policies and procedures
  9. Must be self-disciplined and team-work oriented, as demonstrated in application materials.
