Under general supervision, utilizes the nursing process in providing nursing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in accordance with established standards of care. The surgical technologist scope of practice includes performance of scrub duties for surgical procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes and performs as a surgical scrub technologist, including the collection and preparation of equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for surgical procedures
  • Following a complete surgical scrub, prepares the O.R. for the procedure; drapes the black table and mayo stand; opens all packs and prepares instruments, supplies, and basins; arranges the room and instruments per physician preference
  • Completes a pre-op final count for sponges, instruments and sharps with circulator present when applicable
  • Arranges drapes, suction and sterile field
  • Hands instruments to surgeon during procedure
  • Cleans instruments as received back from surgeon and keeps instruments readily at hand during the case
  • Assists the surgeon with gowning and gloving before the start of the case
  • Continually works in a neat, organized, safe and efficient manner
  • Continually observes closely and anticipates any special problems and equipment or supply needs as the case progresses
  • Keeps track of all instruments, supplies, sponges and sharps throughout the case
  • Assists the circulating nurse with the safe transfer of the patient to the recovery room after the procedure

  • surfaces, disposing of trash and waste, and instrument cleaning and processing
  • Completes the surgeons' preference cards and keeps them up to date

  • Participates in maintaining a safe environment, utilizing the principles of aseptic technique
  • Practices sound cost containment measures while providing supplies and equipment for patient care

  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information following HIPAA guidelines and TEC policies
  • Attends training to meet requirements of the job position and as needed or mandated by TEC policies, Div. of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH), OSHA, L&I and other state/federal regulations
  • Has regular and predictable attendance

Required Qualifications:



  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technologists
  • Current AHA- BLS Certification
  • 2+ years of experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting or a busy multi-specialty ASC



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Current ORT (Operating Room Technician) certification
  • Proven knowledge of anatomy and physiology; of aseptic technique; of basic surgical technique regarding procedures done in the ASC, and of names, functioning and use of instruments, equipment and sutures used
  • Proven good organizational skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and numerical accuracy
  • Ability to read, speak, understand and write clearly in English
  • Ability to work with initiative, energy and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work efficiently amidst ongoing distractions
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform work against deadlines
  • Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely; and ability to instruct and train others
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public in confrontational situations
  • Ability to effectively lead others



The hourly range for this role is $27.00 to $37.00 per hour based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
