GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION

The College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) seeks an enthusiastic and passionate program manager for the Broaden and Build California Health Workforce program (hereafter "Broaden and Build"). Broaden and Build is a 4-year initiative that aims to create a pathway for high school students and other displaced workers into the health workforce. The program is especially interested in supporting students and others from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure the health workforce of tomorrow better represents the population it serves. Broaden and Build is funded by the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) (Grant #HPPP-0001227) and is implemented in partnership with ProCareer Academy.

The program manager, under the Broaden and Build principal investigator and CHHS associate dean of research, oversees day-to-day operations in four key areas:

  1. Managing an annual sub-contractual agreement.
  2. Coordinating events to expose eligible participants to the Broaden and Build program.
  3. Developing procedures and materials to support Broaden and Build participants' entrance into SJSU health career programs.
  4. Leading the Spartan Health Ambassadors program, an interprofessional community of practice for health students.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

In consultation with the Broaden and Build Principal Investigator, the project manager will:

1. Manage an annual sub-contractual agreement.

  • Collaborate with SJSURF staff to ensure timely yearly renewal of the sub-contractual agreement.
  • Evaluate quarterly reports from the subcontractor to ensure benchmarks are met and approve submitted invoices for payment.
  • Oversee the accumulation of necessary data for completing annual progress reports.


2. Coordinate events to expose eligible participants to the Broaden and Build program.

  • Develop and maintain Broaden and Build marketing materials.
  • Coordinate with internal partners (e.g., CHHS Chairs and Directors, Student Outreach and Recruitment) and external partners (e.g., Santa Clara County Office of Education) to reach potential Broaden and Build participants.
  • Lead student volunteers at tabling events on and off campus to reach potential Broaden and Build participants, including tracking and evaluating event success.


3. Develop procedures and materials to support Broaden and Build participants' entrance into SJSU health career degree programs.

  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking and evaluating Broaden and Build participants' entrance into and progress through SJSU health care degree programs.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders like CHHS Chairs and Directors and CHHS Advising to ensure Broaden and Build participants have a clear pathway into an SJSU health care degree program and are aware of supports and services to ensure their success.


4. Lead the Spartan Health Ambassadors program, an interprofessional community of practice for health students.

  • Recruit and guide a student leadership team to establish a designated student organization (Spartan Health Ambassadors).
  • Advise the Spartan Health Ambassadors in creating and coordinating quarterly events to advance participants' knowledge and ability to engage in interprofessional practice.
  • Advise and oversee the Spartan Health Ambassadors' community engagement activities, including tabling events for the Broaden and Build program.


5. Perform other duties as assigned.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

  1. Reports to the principal investigator regarding policies, procedures, activities, and program/student matters.
  2. Collaborate with SJSU Research Foundation in all aspects of subcontractual agreements and post-award accounting, including establishing and approving project purchase orders.
  3. Collaborate with SJSU offices like Student Outreach and Recruitment and Student Advising, as well as Community Partners (e.g., ProCareer Academy) and local and regional high school and community college staff.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


  • This position does not require the supervision of subordinates or paid staff.
  • Some student advising/mentoring and oversight.


QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications


  • A bachelor's degree in a health profession.
  • In-depth experience managing multi-component externally funded projects.
  • Strong experience establishing and maintaining rapport with individuals aged 16-26.


Additional Requirements

  • Strong oral and written English.
  • Proficiency with standard electronic tools like email, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • Demonstrated commitment to value diversity and to contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.


Desired Accomplishments

  • Project management certification.
  • Speaking fluency in one or more common languages spoken in the South Bay area (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese).


Physical Demands

  • The vast majority of assigned responsibilities involve working in an office (sitting or standing) with a computer and associated programs
  • Regional travel by automobile required a maximum of three days/month on average. Travel requires transporting and moving light objects suitable for table displays (maximum 10 lbs).
  • Remote work arrangements are possible.


A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the SJSURF.
