Position Summary

The Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine, within the Department of Internal Medicine, is seeking a Senior Biostatistician to address a significant workforce shortage at UNMHSC to support the design, conduct, and analysis of research studies. The successful candidate will have expertise in data management and analysis using software package such as R or SAS; experience in electronic medical record database, database software such as SQL and REDCap, data quality control, and design and analysis of clinical research studies.

The Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Preventive Medicine has a robust research portfolio that includes research studies of randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and large administrative databases to address a variety of biomedical and health research questions. The Division maintains close ties to many UNM departments, centers, and colleges. There are extensive opportunities for collaborative research in areas of cardiology, neuroscience, nephrology, environmental health, pediatrics, surgery, as well as data sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Creates analysis plans and study design of clinical trials, cohort studies, and observational studies including sample size/power calculations and missing data. This involves participating grant development for new or continuing projects through writing relevant sections on study designs and statistical data analysis plans

2. Conducts consultation to investigators and researchers on efficient study designs and appropriate statistical approaches to help ensure scientific rigor and standards for research to advance biomedical knowledge and improve health

3. Conducts data management using appropriate database systems (e.g. REDCap) that includes data processing, quality assurance and quality control, data dictionary and other documentations.

4. Conduct data analysis to implement statistical analysis plans, including assessing reliability of measurements, statistical model acceptability and robustness, interpretation and presentation of statistical results, manuscript preparation, review, and critique.

5. Supervises assigned personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution

6. Maintains current knowledge of new and emerge statistical techniques, development of statistical software, health informatics, machine learning and AI techniques

7. Responds to statistical issues arising in regulatory, quality and compliance, clinical, or other legal settings from regulatory agencies, local Institutional Review Board and other health authorities; prepares documents and reports to support clinical trials, including protocols, investigator brochures, patient safety and privacy.

8. Builds and sustains collaborative relationships across UNMHSC through serving as subject-matter expert for research teams, internal and external committees, other constituencies.

9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties (e.g. conducting research and biostatistical training) as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in statistics, applied statistics or closely related field
  • Experience performing statistical analysis of biomedical and health data
  • Experience using R, SAS in statistical data management and analysis
  • Experience writing, testing, implementing, and documenting statistical computer software programs
  • Experience using large databases, including EHR/EMR, data processing, and creating analytic datasets suitable for analysis
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time to complete multiple simultaneous projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, analytic results to clinicians and the study team
  • Knowledge and experience in informatics techniques (e.g. machine learning)
