General Dynamics NASSCO traces its beginnings to the industrial heart of SanDiego, along the working waterfront of beautiful and historic SanDiego Bay. The company has been designing and building ships in SanDiego's industrial corridor since 1960 and is the largest full service shipyard on the West Coast of the United States. Job Summary Commissions, operates, installs, maintains, and repairs ship's main propulsion and auxiliary systems including, but not limited to Steam, Gas Turbine, Diesel propulsion, propulsion shafting, propellers, rudders and steering engines. Commissions, operates, installs, maintains ship's fluid systems including, but not limited to; pumps, compressors, purifiers, refrigeration units, heat exchangers, hydraulic motors actuators and valves. Tests installed equipment to ensure systems meet specifications. Installs and tests various shop equipment. May perform responsibilities solely in the Test & Trials department. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position. Qualification Standards High school or equivalent education preferred. Minimum three years in related experience or three years in any of the following U. S. Navy ratings: BM, BT, DC, EN, GSM, HT, MM, MMA, MR are preferred. Training in shipboard system or equipment operations, machine shop, hardware alignment and blueprint reading preferred. Need good mechanical skills. EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification is beneficial but not required. Must have ability to use hand tools and to read technical manuals. Need good knowledge of ship layout. Must have ability to work at heights and confined spaces, access and move around ships safely. Essential Job Tasks
Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids Measuring devices, high speed drills, hand tools, power tools, torque wrenches, and ship equipment such as engines, piping systems, main & auxiliary machinery. Personal protective equipment will be provided. Employee is expected to have a set of tools that is suitable for shipboard use including but not limited to- metric/standard open end wrench set, metric/standard sockets, metric/standard hex keys, pipe wrench, screwdrivers, pliers (standard and snap-ring), vice grips, channel locks, and measuring tape Physical/Mental Involvement Lifting/carrying equipment up to 65 lbs., standing, walking, reaching, pushing, balancing, pulling, crawling through small openings, manual dexterity, bending, seeing and hearing, and occasional bending and kneeling. Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints. Practice required safety procedures. Environmental Factors Works in tight confined work spaces on board ship, units and blocks. Works at varied heights. Is exposed to various temperatures, wind and humid conditions. Is exposed to fumes, odors and dust. Works with toxic and caustic chemicals. Is constantly exposed to loud machinery and tool noise. PAYSCALE: $33.88 - $37.23 This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
