This is a location specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this MDTA position/function only. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. For over 50 years, the MDTA has provided Maryland's citizens and visitors with safe, secure, and convenient transportation facilities. Nature of Work: The main purpose of this position is to manage the preventative maintenance and repair of all vehicles and motorized equipment at the Harry W. Nice/Thomas "Mac" Middleton Bridge. This includes supervising Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technicians (HEMTs) and a Shop Administrative Technician (SAT). Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide technical assistance to subordinates and write work orders;
  • Enter data pertaining to equipment history and work performed into a computer system;
  • Provide a safe work environment, teaching and offering guidance on the proper use of shop tools and equipment to subordinates;
  • Assist the Facility Administrator during the absence of the Chief Facility Maintenance Officer and Maintenance Supervisor I;
  • Assist with lane closure, weather emergencies, and emergency response;
  • Use a corporate purchasing card to obtain supplies, parts, and payment of facility bills;
  • Participate in employees' annual evaluations and behavior/performance resolution when necessary;
  • Serve as the training coordinator for maintenance staff for CDL license preparation; and
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of all equipment and vehicles.

The employee in this position will report to the Facility Administrator and Chief Facility Maintenance Officer. The current vacancy exists in Newburg, MD.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment. Three years of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)

5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

1. Applicants must possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the state of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.

2. Employees in this class may be required to have satisfied the Heavy Equipment
Maintenance Technician III level of the employing administration's certification program.

3. Employees may be required to obtain their certification in Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery during their probationary period.

4. Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License.

Additional Information

1. Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

2. Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

3. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

4. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
