The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs. It's located in one of the world's safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County's second-largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide. The UC Irvine Police Department provides public safety and law enforcement services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the UCI Irvine campus and properties and the UCI Health Network, which includes UCI Health Orange, UCI Health Irvine, UCI Health Fountain Valley, UCI Health Lakewood, UCI Health Los Alamitos, UCI Health Placentia-Linda, and designated UCI Health clinics. In the Health setting, they are a direct patient-facing position often found in the emergency department and various clinical settings. Public Safety Responders assist in placing persons in restraints, write reports, and monitor patients as needed. They also staff and monitor security systems, including cameras, monitors and alarms.
