Job Summary:
|
The Office of Medical Education is seeking part-time COMPASS Guides (0.20 FTE) and COMPASS Support Guides (0.05 FTE) for the MD Program's Trek Curriculum, with an anticipated start date of approximately July 1, 2025. The mission of the COMPASS Program is to guide medical students through their transformation into physicians, deepen their understanding of how physicians engage with the world, and support their journey toward reaching their full potential. To foster both professional and personal development, each student in the Trek curriculum is paired with a faculty COMPASS Guide for all four (or more) years of medical school. COMPASS Guides serve as longitudinal coaches for student development and as dedicated educators within the Trek curriculum. Each COMPASS Guide works with approximately 10-20 students, typically onboarding 10 new students every other year. As core faculty in the Trek Curriculum and primary faculty within the COMPASS Program, Guides leverage their clinician-educator expertise to teach students critical skills such as coaching, self-reflection, professional identity formation, effective use of feedback, self-directed learning, and fostering a growth mindset. Guides join a vibrant community of educators from diverse specialties and clinical sites, and we encourage faculty from all backgrounds and disciplines to apply. COMPASS Support Guides play an essential role in providing both short-term and long-term coverage as part of the educator-on-call backup system. They step in when a full-time COMPASS Guide takes leave or exits the program, ensuring continuity of faculty support for student groups. Regular responsibilities include teaching one to two Wednesday afternoons per month and participating in the educator-on-call backup system. If a longer-term commitment is required for longitudinal coaching coverage, additional responsibilities and compensation will be discussed. Supervision Received: The position will report to the Director of the COMPASS Program. Supervision Exercised: This position has no direct supervision. Key Responsibilities: Coaching

- Address student concerns promptly, including off-hours emergencies, in collaboration with the Office of Student Life (OSL) and campus resources, while maintaining detailed documentation of all interactions.
- Maintain close communication with the Office of Student Life to ensure seamless coordination of student support and referrals to appropriate resources.
Teaching
- Facilitate small group sessions in various courses and activities, including Health and Society, Professional Identity Formation, Basecamp weeks, and Advanced Science Courses, with responsibilities varying by student year.
- Provide additional support by serving as a substitute facilitator for COMPASS small groups and leading career-advising sessions to prepare students for residency applications.
- Commit to approximately 5 sessions annually for Health and Society and Professional Identity Formation during 2nd and 4th years.
Assessment
- Evaluate student notes and oral presentations for the Clinical Performance Exam and Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships.
- Trek Progress Committee
- Attend monthly Trek Progress Committee meetings to oversee student progress through the curriculum.
- Summarize progress for coached students (non-voting) and vote on the readiness of non-coached students to advance.
- Collaborate on devising and implementing remediation plans for non-coached students.
Community Building
- Participate in 1st-year student orientation (one full day and one half-day commitment) and attend three college social events annually.
- Guide 4th-year Student Leaders (Navigators) in planning and executing events, ensuring that planning sessions focus on goals for the college.
Faculty Development
- Participate in required Faculty Development sessions prior to Trek curriculum launch, attend bi-monthly faculty development and Guide check-ins, and attend the annual COMPASS retreat.
- Meet annually with the COMPASS Program Director for performance evaluation and review, collaborate with the COMPASS coordinator to establish data collection processes, and ensure comprehensive evaluation of college activities.
