Join Our Team as an Environmental Scientist in Portland, ME!

VHB's Maine Natural Sciences group is growing and our South Portland office is looking an enthusiastic and skilled Environmental Scientist to join us.

About the Role:

As an Environmental Scientist, you will be an integral part of our team, conducting natural resource surveys, preparing reports, and helping our clients navigate the complex world of environmental permitting. This position offers the unique opportunity to apply your expertise to help our clients and projects make informed and environmentally sound decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

Wetland Delineation & Natural Resource Surveys : Conduct natural resource surveys including wetland delineations, vernal pool surveys, wildlife habitat evaluations, and rare species surveys.
• Technical Reporting: Prepare comprehensive studies and technical reports, including environmental impact statements and assessments.
• Permitting & Compliance: Develop federal, state, and local permit applications and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
• Ecological Studies: Design and conduct studies on key ecological issues to support public and private sector clients.
• Client Communication: Maintain ongoing dialog with clients to keep them apprised of project status and any changes in conditions.
• Project Management: Establish and track project milestones and business goals, manage budgets, schedules, and deliverables, and supervise junior staff.

• Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, schedules, and deliverables.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or a related field required; a master's degree is preferred.
• Experience: 3-5 years of professional environmental consulting experience required.
• Fieldwork: Ability and willingness to work in physically challenging outdoor situations in all weather conditions, with regular travel to project sites in New England, which may involve overnight stays.
• Technical Skills: Experience in wetland delineation, vernal pool surveys, plant species identification and soil characterization in the New England, and the ability to identify and describe wildlife habitats and ecological communities. Experience with GIS and GPS equipment and utilization.
• Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with state and federal wetland regulations, land use environmental regulations, and environmental permitting at the federal, state and local level.
