Position description

Junior Specialist (Ruggero Lab, UCSF)

The Department of Urology is now recruiting a full-time Junior Specialist in the Ruggero lab https://ruggerolab.ucsf.edu/home. The Ruggero lab is interested in studying the mechanisms by which alterations in translation control drive tumorigenesis. The applicant will work on specific projects and has a unique opportunity to work with a dynamic group of scientists, with the possibility of publishing in a high-impact journal. The position duties include performing molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, plasmid preparation, basic cloning, mouse genotyping and dissection, NGS library prep, gel electrophoresis, tissue culture, basic sequence data analysis, scientific writing, organization of data appropriate to the role in the lab, record keeping and data entry, and shared lab responsibilities including reagent preparation, inventory maintenance and safety compliance.

Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant area of study, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biology, or a related field, from an accredited US college or university, or at least four years of research experience.
  • Previous independent laboratory experience outside of required courses is mandatory.
  • Applicant must be an effective communicator, detail-oriented and organized, able to take the initiative to address research issues, have strong analytical skills, work independently, and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Must be able to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and data and to archive, label, and document graphic and tabular data for publication, proposals, and/or presentations.
  • Applicant must meet all requirements by the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Expertise working with RNA and basic molecular biology techniques, tissue culture, electrophoresis, DNA manipulation techniques, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, transfection, and flow cytometry.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.4.
  • At least a 2-year commitment.
