Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted pay range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $35.00 to $38.41/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full hourly range for this position is $35.00 to $42.14/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Sr. Lab Mechanician is responsible for fabrication and maintenance services using standard and complex machinery to support research and instruction in the College of Engineering (CoE) Machine Shop. Supervises student use of the Machine Shop with emphasis on safety and proper equipment use. Facilitates ME 12S which is a beginning Machine Shop class. Assists with maintaining shop equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience/training.
  • 1-3 years of experience using drill press, horizontal/vertical saw, mill and lathe.
  • 1-3 years of experience using hand tools including dills, saws, wrenches.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience training or teaching others.
  • Less than 1 year of experience working effectively with customers.
  • Some knowledge of the tools related to the design, development, and fabrication of scientific/electronic equipment.
  • Working technical skills associated with providing research support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and in a collaborative manner.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to organize work effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 70% Supervision of College of Engineering Student Shop - Responsible for supervision and instruction of students ME 12S classes on machine shop techniques and individual class projects; incumbent to be appointed as "lecturer without salary" during academic quarters when ME 12S is offered. Provides instruction and support for all student use of the shop with an emphasis on safety and proper equipment use. Administers CoE Machine Shop Safety Test and follows up on preparedness, clearing students, faculty, and staff to use the shop. Assists shop users when necessary.
  • 30% Fabrication of Lab Equipment and Production Jobs - Performs fabrication and maintenance services using standard and complex machinery supporting research in the CoE Machine Shop. Consults and evaluates the design of research projects. Programs, sets up and operates CNC mills, and EDM using MasterCAM software. Inspects own work using standard inspection tools. Performs welding duties using heliarc, arc and oxyacetylene welding equipment. Notifies supervisor of needed materials and supplies. Assists and contributes to Machine Shop requirement of 25 hours of recharge activities per month.
