Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Staff Counselor provides appropriate counseling or referrals services for students, with a focus on student health and well-being.

Duties include:

  • Provides general counseling including individual, relationship and group services
  • Provides crisis intervention
  • Manages client caseload
  • Maintains appropriate clinical and administrative records
  • Participates in the Counseling Center after hours and on-call rotation
  • Develops and delivers proactive workshops and programs for student groups, faculty and university departments focusing on prevention and topics relevant to the campus community
  • Consults with faculty, administrators and staff on developmental and emotional/behavioral concerns within a university environment
  • Engages in appropriate professional practice as outlined by legal and ethical standards
  • Provides general and clinical supervision services as needed
  • Provides administrative duties as requested or assigned


This is a permanent full-time 10-month position and the staff member is expected to work 40 hours a week from August 1 - May 31 annually.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, clinical or counseling psychology, or another related field with 2 or more years of post-Master's experience.
  • Experience providing clinical counseling services to a college aged population as well as working with the issues and concerns exhibited in a college aged population.
  • Experience in providing crisis intervention services.
  • Experience in developing and providing psycho-educational programming for a college-aged population.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and writing skills.
  • Current licensure as an LCMHC, LCSW, or LCSWA (or eligibility for appropriate licensure) in the State of North Carolina is required. Individuals who do not have a professional license at the time of employment are expected to obtain appropriate clinical license within 18 months of hiring. Once licensed, NC licensure must be maintained to remain eligible for employment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • An earned doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology, social work, counseling or another clinically related field.
  • 5 or more years of experience providing counseling services within a college counseling center setting.
  • Experience with administration, progressive outreach programming, database design and management software, and campus consultation services.
  • Professional association involvement.

Required Certifications or Licensures
Current licensure as an LCMHC, LCSW, or LCSWA (or eligibility for appropriate licensure) in the State of North Carolina is required. Individuals who do not have a professional license at the time of employment are expected to obtain appropriate clinical license within 18 months of hiring.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Provides general counseling (individual, relationship, and/or group), development and delivery of outreach programming, consultation, crisis intervention, referral services; Provide general and clinical training and supervision as appropriate to the needs of the Counseling Center.
