Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
We are looking for a candidate who has a background working with marine mammal stranding programs, scientific outreach experience, and familiarity working with adults and children of all backgrounds. The internship coordinator will work collaboratively with the
UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program leadership team to help facilitate day-to-day aspects of the Summer 2025 undergraduate internship. This internship holds a dual emphasis on training interns on marine mammal stranding response protocols and community outreach and education. The duties of the internship coordinator include (but are not limited to):
o Participating in the internship hiring process (e.g., application review and interviews)
o Leading intern training on marine mammal stranding response (Level A and Human Interaction reporting, necropsy protocols, tissue sampling, and data collection and management)
o Leading intern training on accessible scientific communication
o Guiding interns with creating community outreach initiatives and developmentally appropriate educational materials for different age classes
o Day-to-day supervision and direction of interns
o Managing and evaluating intern performance
A successful applicant will have prior experience taking an active role in marine mammal stranding investigations. They should also be well-versed in scientific community outreach and working with people of all ages and backgrounds, especially K-12 students. The internship coordinator should have excellent communication skills and be capable of independent and collaborative work to accomplish the goals of the
UNCW
MMSP team. This position will also work to ensure successful compliance with
UNCW policies and procedures. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- Graduate degree in Biology or similarly related field
- Prior experience working with marine mammal stranding programs
- Prior experience with scientific public outreach
- Access to reliable form of transportation
