About the Department
The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
The Anesthesia Department provides anesthetic support to a variety of patients across our campus including small, large and exotic species, offering exposure to an array of cases and advanced medical procedures with coverage extending 24/7.
The team is composed of Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, along with students, House Officers and Faculty, all uniquely trained for an array of patients needing elective and non-elective urgent and emergent needs.
A person in this department must possess advanced knowledge of veterinary medicine, specifically in anesthetic support, and a strong desire to work with a team of varied individuals, providing guidance and leadership in a fast paced environment.
Management responsibilities include; but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring that all patients in the department will receive high quality care by collaborating with direct reports and specialty service providers to ensure the daily schedule runs smoothly
  • Actively managing teams with frequent and direct communication on day-to-day responsibilities and workflow related to case assignment, patient flow, diagnostic procedures, staffing needs
  • Participating in recruitment, candidate selection, and hiring process
  • Conducting performance management; ensuring human resources policies and related information are shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues
  • Scheduling management including PTO requests, timesheets, on call, and holidays for staff
  • Scheduling management for 1st-3rd year employed DVM students
  • Delivering and overseeing training for all new employees & students, including prep, scrub, equipment, and procedures through training manuals, SOP, and other educational platforms
  • Providing continuing education, staff meetings, and other staff resource and development opportunities
  • Evaluating and modifying protocols to ensure excellent patient care and hospital standards are current
  • Position will aid in the development and implementation of the mission, goals and objectives of the NC State Veterinary Hospital. Assisting administrators along with each supervisor in the planning, coordination and implementation of initiatives, training modules, and hospital wide goals
  • Partnership with faculty to provide consistent messaging and leadership for the department and all participants
  • Managing and evaluating billing policies/practices, ensuring consistency, accuracy and adherence
  • Collaborating with Radiology, Surgery, and Clinical supervisors for equipment, policy and staffing needs


Direct patient care duties include; but are not limited to:

  • Pre-anesthetic patient assessment through record review & service communication regarding presenting problems, diagnostics, treatment options and overall projected plan of care.
  • Providing medical treatments including TPR, bladder expression, venipuncture, venous, arterial & central catheter placement, blood & plasma transfusions, intubations, local blocks and epidurals
  • Operating and interpreting all physiologic patient monitors including ECG, direct and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximeter, capnograph, gas analyzer, anesthesia machine, ventilator, temperature and various diagnostic testing
  • Performing CPR and life saving support
  • Performing high risk drug calculations, including CRI, IV fluid, medical pain management and treatment therapies
  • Providing continuous monitoring for non-surgical patients needing advanced imaging such as XRay, Ultrasound, CT and MRI
  • Providing continuous peri and post operative direct care and monitoring through extubation and transfer to appropriate hospitalization area
  • Post-surgical recovery and care, including pain management, for an array of elective and non-elective small, large and exotic patients
  • Management of antibiotic resistant and infectious disease patients through strict policy adherence
  • Proficient use of specialized patient care equipment such as IV fluid pumps, pulse Oximeter, Direct and Indirect BP monitor, syringe pump, wound vacuum, defibrillator, ventilator, ultrasound machine, ECG
  • Supporting patients throughout many service areas, including but not limited to; Small Animal & Equine Soft Tissue & Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Small Animal & Equine Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Radiation Oncology, Farm Animal Surgery, Dentistry, and Exotics


The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing all record documentation with a variety of data relating to records/logs, equipment and patient care with use of hospital information systems
  • Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Ensuring department and staff are following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
  • Overseeing logs associated with OSHA regulated equipment including radiology equipment, eye wash & shower stations
  • Preparing department and staff for an array of inspections
  • Collaborating with surgery supervisor and clinical scheduling team to meet anticipated case deadlines and create more efficient hospital workflow and individual case outcomes

Other Responsibilities

  • Working closely with other supervisors and lead technicians to develop standard operating procedures on patient care and promotes an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement.
  • Promoting a positive work environment that fosters communication, trust, problem solving, employee recognition and quality improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Previous experience with equine and farm animal patients
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
Required License or Certification

  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
