DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will engage in entry-level technical inspections and material testing for construction initiatives within Engineering District 10-0, ensuring that all activities adhere to the established construction codes, plans, standards, and specifications. The primary responsibilities for the selected candidate will include conducting a range of independent technical tasks, such as inspecting materials and assessing the quality of workmanship on highway construction projects, as well as contributing to the design aspects of these projects. You will support highway construction efforts by performing various inspection and testing functions to verify compliance with contract stipulations, established specifications, and certification requirements, while also assisting in the design of highway construction projects. Your duties will encompass inspecting all routine phases of highway construction, which includes verifying grades, elevations, and the layout of roadways and simple structures.

You will be responsible for maintaining a daily written log of your activities in line with Department protocols, documenting completed work, items eligible for payment in current estimates, and certifying materials used. Additionally, you will assist the project supervisor in preparing periodic payment estimates for contractors and progress reports that summarize project activities, including records of labor, materials, and equipment utilized. Your role will also involve inspecting and conducting acceptance testing on concrete products at various project sites to ensure compliance with specifications and standards. Furthermore, you will assist in verifying grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. Your responsibilities will extend to inspecting the placement of materials such as cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage materials, while also completing Project Summary Activities (PSA) entries, performing mathematical calculations, estimating item quantities, preparing project cost estimates, and managing work orders and time extensions, all of which may be documented manually or electronically. You will also play a key role in addressing and resolving any field issues that may arise during the construction process.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position may require travel and overtime as needed.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Indiana.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $39,785.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:
  • This particular position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License.
