Job Summary

The Financial Analyst II is responsible for supporting the capital reporting, budgeting, forecasting and providing financial analysis for the Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU), including Piedmont Natural Gas and Duke Energy Midwest Gas in KY and OH.

The analyst will work closely with teammates, peers, and management on various financial activities including capital project set up and preparation of NGBU internal and external reporting at a granular level. The position will analyze and research ad-hoc requests, help to develop reporting, create efficiencies, and effectively prepare presentations for management review and decision making. This position works closely with the NGBU project management and controls, Rates and Regulatory as well as the overall Finance organization. Effective communication and relationship building are crucial to succeed in this role.

Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in financial areas of specialization, with moderate guidance and direction. Employees are building their knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with limited guidance and direction from others.

Responsibilities
  • Setting up and maintaining funding projects in Powerplan

  • Assist in capital forecast preparation and updates in PowerPlan at a funding project level

  • Prepare standard and correcting journal entries

  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations

  • Prepare standard monthly reporting

  • Assist with data requests from Regulatory and external auditors and other customers

  • Provide accounting support as needed

  • Understand and maintain proper business and financial processes to ensure adherence to internal controls and policies

  • Identify process improvements and assist in implementation to produce efficiencies at all stages of the finance process

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in (Accounting/Finance/Economics) OR a bachelor's degree in a similar discipline with prior (accounting/finance/economics) work experience

  • 2+ years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree

  • Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Effective communication, both oral and written, and collaboration skills

  • Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, PowerPlan, FIHUB etc.)

Desired Qualifications
  • 4+ years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree

  • Graduate degree in Accounting, Business or related fields

  • Previous experience with project lifecycles, budgeting and forecasting

  • Previous experience with financial analysis

  • Experience applying GAAP accounting principles

  • Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and foster good relationships with teammates and business partners

  • Operational business support experience

  • Previous experience in Utility, utility asset or regulatory accounting environment.

  • Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills - including data analytics

  • Ability to effectively perform at the experienced analyst level, including ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adhere to strict deadlines and schedules

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

  • Hybrid with in-office work location 3 days per week at Duke Energy Plaza in Charlotte, NC

  • Overtime may be required

  • Occasional travel
