Primary Purpose of the Position
The Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education ( CASE) at WSSU seeks to fill a nine-month instructor position with a start date of August 2025. This position is a one-year, annually reappointed position. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses and academically advising and mentoring undergraduate psychology majors. Additional duties include participating in departmental and college service.

We seek remarkable, student-centered candidates who are highly committed to effective teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students. The candidates must provide evidence demonstrating their commitment to teaching students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, utilizing various technologies to engage students in the learning and mentoring processes, and engaging in high-impact practices. We desire candidates who meet the following requirements.

  • A master's or Ph.D. in psychology
  • Provide evidence of effective teaching using high-impact practices for various undergraduate psychology courses, including but not limited to the Language of Psychology, Research Methods & Statistics, Black Psychology, Abnormal Behavior, Social Psychology, and Cross-Cultural Psychology.
  • Show evidence of effective undergraduate advising or the ability to advise undergraduate psychology majors to complete their degrees successfully.
  • Exhibit the desire and/or ability to revise the undergraduate psychology academic advising process.
  • Attend and participate in departmental, college, and university faculty meetings.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
We welcome candidates with previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level in psychology. Utilizing high-impact practices inside and outside the classroom to ensure students' academic success and previous academic advising experience is also preferred.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
Effective candidates will teach four or five undergraduate psychology courses each fall and spring semester (4/4 or 5/5) face-to-face and online. Courses will include foundational (e.g., Language of Psychology and Research Methods & Statistics) and depth areas (e.g., Black Psychology, Social Psychology, and Cross-Cultural Psychology). The candidate must communicate effectively with students, provide detailed course syllabi by the first day of classes, and hold weekly office hours. The candidate will also provide academic advising and career mentoring for undergraduate psychology majors.
