Title: Health Educator - PFAS

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Occasional In-Person Work at Lansing, MI Office Required

Purpose: This position is primarily responsible for providing health education development support to the Environmental Health Bureau. The Health Educator - PFAS will work in cooperation with technical subject-area experts within the bureau in addition to external stakeholders, to develop strategic statewide and localized educational campaigns with the goal of protecting public health.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive and strategic educational environmental public health campaigns, with a focus on PFAS exposure prevention.
  • Prepare fact sheets, brochures and other written materials for public use concerning statewide PFAS response initiatives.
  • Provide general health education materials for statewide and local initiatives.
  • Conduct literature searches and identify best practices regarding environmental health education.
  • Collaborate with epidemiologists, toxicologist, engagement specialists to design, review, test, and implement educational materials.
  • Participate in development of Health Education protocols and reporting procedures for the Section.
  • Participate in public meetings, training events, and telephone conversations as needed.
  • Remain current with health education, risk communication, and social media trends.
  • Provide additional support to the section, division, bureau, and department on an as-needed basis.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a master's degree in public health, health communication, health policy or a public health related field such as nursing, epidemiology, health education, health economics, dietetics/nutrition management, genetics, or speech and audiology; a master's degree in social work; master's degree in counseling; master's degree in special education with specialization in blind/visual disabilities; or a master's degree in public or business administration with a health care concentration.

Experience: No experience required. Two or more years of experience in health education, community outreach, health communications, or public relations preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Advanced knowledge of social science theories and models.
  • Moderate to advanced knowledge of risk communication.
  • Advanced ability to convey highly technical information to the lay public through effective written and oral communication.
  • Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal supervision.
  • Basic to moderate skills using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Some basic understanding or willingness to learn scientific principles, practices and procedures of toxicology and biology.
  • Basic experience with the practice of compiling and summarizing highly complex scientific literature.
  • Ability to maintain records and assist with public health assessments and consultations.
  • Ability to prioritize and concurrently support communications need assessments and development of outreach materials for multiple complex and diverse sites.
  • Understanding of implementation and dissemination science.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: The employee may transport supplies public events around the state. Events are usually outside, and the employee may be exposed to local weather conditions. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. Requires a valid vehicle operator's license and occasional travel within the state, including overnights. Less frequently, travel may be required outside of the state.
