This is a great opportunity for students to explore their interest and gain work experience in the Facilities Engineering field. Candidate may be hired in a co-op, intern or summer temp capacity; however, preference will be given to candidates specifically seeking an internship or co-op. An internship would last approximately 3-4 months during the summer season and co-op would last up to 6 months. Candidates will be responsible for arranging the internship with their university/college. This position does not include benefits.
The Facilities Engineering Intern is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks in building HVAC field, building automation, automation analytics, Energy usage review, report writing, CAD work and other various tasks for Facilities management related projects. This position works for the Facilities Management unit within the Dakota County Parks, Facilities, and Library Department.

Minimum Qualifications

* Enrollment in an ABET accredited college or university program for mechanical engineering, civil engineering, construction engineering, or closely related program. AND * Valid driver's license
PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED, EDUCATION BEYOND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * At least 1 year of completed coursework within an Mechanical engineering, civil engineering/technician or construction engineering. * Previous engineering or technical internships.

Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.
1. Assist the Facilities Management Unit in compiling, identifying and assessing existing mechanical equipment in all Dakota County facilities. 2. Update existing 5, 15, 20, 40 year plans for replacement of mechanical equipment related to equipment age, energy efficiency, HCFC phase out, etc. 3. Assist with set up of preventative maintenance documentation for new work order system. 4. Assist in reviewing HVAC issues detected in our analytic software. 5. Assist with misc. projects related to energy savings, building automation, mechanical equipment replacement and life safety systems. 6. Assist the Facilities management with project selection, work plan preparation, data collection and management, consultant oversight, field work, project management and other project related activities. 7. Work as part of multi-department project teams which could include Project Managers, Technicians, Engineers with day-to-day activities will include field data collection, data and database importing, and data analysis; GIS analysis and map generation; report writing and reviewing; and team meetings and conference calls. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1 - 7 are essential functions as well as regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule.

* Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills. * Mathematically competent and science literate. * Exceptional work ethic, reliable and consistent performance and attendance. * Fluency in modern office software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) * Working knowledge of database computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office Access) and other engineering related programs (e.g. AutoCAD, ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, HY-8) * Positive attitude and ability and desire to learn new technical skills quickly. * Must be a self-motivator and enjoy problem solving.
Work Environment/Location The position will be centrally located at the Government Center in Hastings, Minnesota. The vast majority of the work will be sedentary sitting at a desk or walking around County buildings, both outdoors and indoors, to perform work.
