The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Water Meter Technician.

The Water and Wastewater Services, Business Operations Division is seeking a self-motivated and diligent Water Meter Technician (WMT) with exceptional customer service and technical skills. The WMT should have experience working with back-flow devices, water meters, and assisting customers in identifying water meter related concerns. The WMT will be required to test various sized meters for accuracy, measure water volume, and install/replace meters throughout the Broward County service area. The WMT will work under general supervision and according to set procedures. The WMT shall preserve county resources at all times and identify and implement efficiencies, as needed. The WMT shall have the ability to work in an outdoor environment under various weather conditions and expect some exposure to rodents, insects, reptiles, and pets. The WMT shall have excellent verbal and inter-personnel skills, and the ability to communicate in a calm, clear, and concise manner at all times. The WMT will work with internal and external customers, and utilize various web-based programs and electronic devices such as computers, smart-phones, iPads and etc. to receive/update service requests in the field, and provide exceptional customer service.

General Description

Installs and maintains water meters.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of water meters, or basic plumbing experience, or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License for duration of appointment.

Must obtain a Level III Water Distribution System Operator's license issued by the State of Florida within one year of appointment.

Preferences
  • Vocational Degree in closely related field
  • Associate's Degree or higher in closely related field
  • Backflow Testing/ Repair certifications
  • Journeyman Plumber Certification
  • Water Distribution System Operator License Level II or I
  • One (1) year of experience using Maximo or another Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Two (2) years of experience in water meter installation, maintenance and repair and/or plumbing.
  • Two (2) years of experience conducting pressure tests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Installs, removes, replaces, tests, and performs service work on small, medium and large water meters, ensuring customers' meter is in proper working order.

Downloads meter reading data from data loggers for customers' review; repairs meter leaks; performs low pressure tests; installs risers when meter is too deep; checks for tampering, straight lines; determines if leak repairs need to be escalated to other sections.

Assists customers with requests and directs them accordingly.

Performs related work as assigned.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
