Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Student Health Service is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and is charged with the responsibility of providing primary health care for the student body of East Carolina University. The primary care encompasses delivery of acute medical care, preventative medical care, health education, and mental health care; provision of laboratory and pharmaceutical services, administrative support services, medical records, radiology, and the education of ECU School of Medicine residents are included in our array of services. The Student Health Service department also provides advisory and educational assistance to other university departments, i.e. Sports Medicine, Intramural Recreational Services, Health Education, and other departments. The Student Health Service is mandated by the University and the State of North Carolina to deliver "State of the Art" medical care, economically to all fee-paying students through a predetermined budget. The medical needs of the ECU student body require that the Student Health Service be a multi-functional and constantly changed department.
Job Duties
The Nurse Practitioner will provide quality care to ECU students with developed protocol or on consultation basis; evaluate, diagnose and provide care for common illnesses and injuries (i.e. colds, sprains), complex illnesses and injuries; evaluate counsel, and provide on-going care for chronic illnesses (i.e. cystic fibrosis, RA); evaluate and provide on-going care for all students; utilize professional judgment in consulting and referring to outside physicians; utilize professional judgment in ordering and evaluating lab and x-ray; prescribe with the approved formulary; incorporate emotional care into medical aspect of care, while also being able to provide mental health care within the scope of practice, responsible for providing adequate and thorough patient education; provide immediate, medical, emotional, and psychological support to victims of sexual assault; provide medical consultation for other medical providers in areas of expertise (e.g. dermatology); provide consultation for the Nursing Staff to enhance teaching of wellness concepts; utilize skills and knowledge to offer suggestions to Tracking Nurse to improve efficiency of patient follow-up; and provide consultation for the health educator for the evaluation of educational materials and individual student questions and concerns.
Minimum Education/Experience
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and "approved to practice medical acts" by the Joint Subcommittee.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
