Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is accepting applications for our 2025 Student Healthcare Internship Program (S.H.I.P)

The S.H.I.P 8-week program gives students within their last 2 semesters of a Registered Nurse program the opportunity to shadow and learn valuable skills in a real hospital setting.

S.H.I.P. provides aspiring nurses unique opportunities to earn premium pay while working in an acute care setting at this nationally recognized, four-time Magnet-designated community hospital, located in Charlottesville Va.

Allapplicants who are selected toenroll in this internship will be expected to complete the summerschedule. Students who successfully complete theS.H.I.P. schedulewill be provided with preferential jobplacement.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Student of a Registered Nursing Program within 2 semesters of graduation
  • Availability for 1 shift per week on home unit (12 hour) and a half day shadow and lunch.
  • Availability for first week orientation within home unit. (3 Twelve-hour shifts)

SHIP candidates receive:

Paid Internship!

Preferential hiring status after completion of the program.

  • Specialty units like ICU, Emergency Department, and Women's Health.
  • And so much more!!

Important Dates:

Panel Interviews - February 19th, 20th, 25th, and 26th

Participants Selected - March 3rd

Program Begins - May 20th

Unit Orientation- 3 shifts on home unit begins May 27th

Job Summary

Employed unlicensed assistive staff members who have successfully completed at least one clinical rotation and are actively enrolled in an accredited RN program. Accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional registered nurse or APRN provider to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and document in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nursing or medical staff.

Nursing students in their final one or two clinical rotations or equivalent senior year prior to graduation will be able to complete higher level tasks as reflected in the advanced level optional competencies including shadowing/partnering with specialty nurses and peripheral IV insertion.

Validated acceptance in and actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program with minimum of one semester/clinical rotation completed is required.

Qualifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) RQI
