Reliability Engineering - Training Department

The Training Team is dedicated to fostering expertise and proficiency within Vantage Data Centers' workforce. Responsible for comprehensive training initiatives across all global facilities, our team ensures the mastery of critical systems including Electrical, Mechanical, and Controls. From guiding successful commissioning processes during new construction to enhancing the reliability and performance of existing infrastructure, we design tailored training programs. These programs support operational excellence by equipping Site Operations Teams with the necessary technical knowledge and skills.

Position Overview

This role will be based in: Sterling, VA and is in alignment with our flexible work policy. (3 days on site required, 2 days flexible).

The Critical Systems Training team develops clear, concise, and accurate documentation to support our data center operations, engineering, and support teams. We collaborate with subject matter experts across the organization to create user guides, standard operating procedures, troubleshooting manuals, and other critical documents.

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to develop and deliver immersive training programs focused on technical writing best practices and documentation tools. This hands-on training role will educate technical writers, engineers, and other groups on information design, instructional writing, authoring tools, and related topics.

Essential Job Functions

  • Works autonomously with minimal supervision, both independently and within a team environment.

  • Develop and deliver engaging classroom, virtual, and hands-on technical writing training.

  • Collaborate with various department managers to identify key learning objectives.

  • Maintain expertise in technical writing methodologies, standards, and tools.

  • Design interactive exercises and workshops on document design, layout, and organization.

  • Evaluate effectiveness of technical writing training programs using surveys and assessments.

  • Maintain training records and report on participation rates and proficiency gains.

  • Research industry trends and innovations in technical communication.

  • Champion clear, concise, user-focused writing best practices.

  • Frequent contact with employees at all levels of the organization; frequent external contact with vendors.

  • Additional duties as assigned by Management.

Duties

The Technical Writer, Critical Systems Training, NA will develop and deliver interactive programs and workshops covering key areas such as:

  • Principles of clear, concise, and accurate technical writing.

  • Information design and architecture for user guides and manuals.

  • Best practices for writing standard operating procedures.

  • Instructional design techniques for tutorials and how-to guides.

  • Creating visual aids - diagrams, flowcharts, screenshots.

  • Utilizing authoring tools and content management systems.

  • Writing for different audiences - technicians, engineers, management.

  • Usability testing and continuous improvement of documentation.

  • Collaborating with SMEs and incorporating feedback.

  • Documenting APIs, SDKs and developer tools (recommended but not required)

  • Ensure documentation is translated into required languages as required by policy.

  • Communicate regularly with management on issues, constraints, and project status.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years, 5+ years preferred, developing and facilitating technical writing within data center or equivalent. Familiarity with the following systems is recommended, but not required: the maintenance and repair of industrial electrical and mechanical systems in mission-critical facilities to include; emergency generators (Generators, Fuel Delivery systems and Parallel Switchgear), electrical distribution (MV/LV switchgear and associated controls), critical and essential PDUs, UPS, switchgear, HVAC, air handling units, computer grade cooling systems, and building monitoring/control systems.

  • Technical Writing skills and experience; as well as creating, coordinating, updating and/or modifying Drill Guides, Training Documents, and Training Policies for the Operations Department, to include supporting new systems and researching technical requirements.

  • Work experience in the electrical or mechanical field is an asset. Strong emphasis on technical skills/training, must have license pertaining to their field.

  • Deep experience with instructional design, information architecture, and authoring tools.

  • Understanding of data center, engineering, and IT terminology and concepts.

  • Track record creating clear, accurate, and engaging technical documentation.

  • Creative training design skills and dynamic instructional abilities.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, analytical and organizational skills.

  • Passion for advancing technical writing skills utilizing immersive techniques.

  • Candidates must possess reliable transportation for reporting to work for shifts, or emergencies.

  • Travel is expected to be up to 10%, occasionally for training purposes.

  • Potential employees must complete a background check successfully.
