Job Summary

This position contributes to a range of animal experiments conducted at the IND's Animal Facility, which includes procedures such as bioluminescence imaging, brain inoculation, wound closures, perfusions, sample collections/preservation/storage, necropsies, injections, anesthesia, gavage, reagent administration, and neurodegenerative diagnosis. This position is responsible for maintaining proficiency of all previously utilized procedures, as well as continued education and training in new procedures and techniques. The position is required to conduct all animal procedures without causing any undue stress to animals, while maintaining accurate records, that document any animal distress, anesthesia administration, unexpected outcomes, and deviations from SOPs. Good records must be maintained in the electronic database, as well as in hard copy.

This position is also responsible for performing inoculations and neurological diagnoses for all research groups. This person will also be trained in special procedures including but not limited to; CSF collection in mice and rats, oral gavage, PK study acclimation, and initiation and completion, comprehensive cataloging of all tissue samples for transport to other UCSF campuses (10's of thousands of samples), dosing animals with special diets. Additionally, this person can devote up to 20% of their time assisting other critical needs of the Animal facility, including but not limited to; cage wash assistance, colony maintenance and procedures, husbandry duties including cage changes and animal welfare checks, or any other tasks assigned by the supervisor which are deemed critical to the needs of the animal facility.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is entirely dedicated to research on neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple systems atrophy, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's. Its animal facility houses one of the largest colony of animals involved in prion disease research in the world. It is also one of the largest transgenic facilities dedicated to a single group of diseases. It produces over 10,000 transgenic animals per year carrying diverse modifications of a single gene or multiple genes at once. Our mission is to find currently non-existent cures for these debilitating neurodegenerative diseases affecting large segments of the population. Our entire staff is dedicated to this mission, operating on the cutting-edge of science, while maintaining the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley Prusiner, MD.

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • 1+ years work in an Animal Care and Use Program
  • 1+ years working in a ABSL1 or ABSL2 environment
  • 1+ years work experience handling rodents
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong sense of responsibility and transparency with all aspects of job
  • Attention to detail
  • Basic laboratory skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to read and follow detailed scientific literature and directions, including literature on experimental methods and detailed Standard Operating Procedures


SRA II: in addition to above
  • BA/BS degree in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in basic rodent biomethodology techniques (anesthesia, injections, bleeding, etc.).
  • Experience reporting abnormal signs in rodents (experience in nervous system abnormalities highly preferred)
  • Working knowledge of mouse genetics and nomenclature
  • Experience in administering drugs to rodents
  • AAALAS certification
