Summary:
Responsible for the management of the Central Sterile department to include decontamination, processing, and sterilization of instruments as well as decontamination and distribution of patient care equipment. This includes responsibility for providing quality services, leadership, human resource stewardship/management, financial stewardship, regulatory accreditation issues, and professional development of these areas.
Responsibilities:
1. Leads operational workflows related to the decontamination, processing, inspection, sterilization, and distribution of inventoried items within the Central Sterile department.
2.Communicates and coordinates the day-to-day operations between Central Sterile, the Operating Room, and other departments.
3.Monitors and manages Central Sterile equipment to ensure equipment is maintained in good condition. Maintains data for repairs and routine maintenance of instruments and service agreements for equipment related to Central Sterile (i.e., sterilizers, Washers, etc.).
4.Evaluates and oversees sterile processing of new instrumentation and equipment by ensuring proper education and/or written instructions have been provided to teammates prior to processing.
5.Oversees the scheduling and staffing of the department to meet demand.
6.Interviews candidates and makes recommendations on hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, corrective actions, terminations, and similar actions. Directs the completion of performance reviews. Resolves grievances and other human resource issues in a fair, timely and consistent manner in partnership with HR.
7.Organizes continuing education programs, in-services, and staff meetings to meet regulatory and job requirements. Ensures teammates obtain and maintain certifications. Assists teammates in gaining proper orientation, information and study materials for exam preparation. Keeps accurate records on training and certification for Central Sterile teammates.
8.Conducts annual competency assessment of staff and completes teammate performance reviews.
9.Performs direct observation of processes to ensure departmental efficiency, quality, and compliance with accepted industry standards (i.e., TJC, AAMI). Develops a quality assurance program aimed at reducing preventable errors.
10.Maintains departmental policies to ensure they reflect current practice, standards and recommendations from national organizations (i.e., AAMI, CDC, AORN, Joint Commission and state hospital licensure regulations).
11.Investigates sentinel events and errors and develops and implements strategies to address the conditions that contributed to these situations.
12.Monitors unit(s) performance and ensures continuous improvement. Stays current in trends and developments in Central Sterile practices. Shares information proactively with teammates.
13.Ensures that quarterly safety checks are performed in Central Sterile.
14.Maintains sterilization records for monthly/quarterly QA reporting for Central Sterile and the Operating Room.
15.Accesses and utilizes appropriate administrative/clinical/financial systems. Acquires and maintains quantitative skills for data analysis. Aligns work unit goals with organizational strategic direction Collaborates with Director to complete long-term plans and annual budgets. Monitors fiscal variances and develops corrective action plans when needed.
16.Maintains adequate supply levels for all departmental supplies including emergency crash carts. Addresses supply issues in a timely manner with materials management.
17.Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, exhibits high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems. Maintains collaborative relationships with leaders, teammates, customers, and physicians.

Other information:
Education
Associates Degree or higher in health care related field required.
Licensure/Certification
*Current certification by CBSPD or HSPA required.
*Certified Healthcare Leader and Certification in Endoscopy strongly preferred. If not certified on hire, must obtain certification within one year.
Experience
*Five (5) years of experience in sterile processing or surgical setting required.
*One year experience in Supervisory role required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
*In depth knowledge of medical terminology, surgical instruments, surgical workflow, sterilization techniques, surgical preference lists, instrument assembly, and case cart system.
*Proficiency with instrument tracking system.
*Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize and reprioritize scheduling of work.
*Ability to lead, guide and motivate others.
*Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with teammates, supervisors, providers, administration and patients.
*Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.
*Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
Valid NC Driver's License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
