Position Summary

The AMI Grid Support Manager oversees the daily operations, maintenance, and performance of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, ensuring data accuracy, system reliability, and responsive customer support. This role involves managing a team of specialists and technicians, coordinating cross-departmental projects, and developing strategies to improve AMI system performance and efficiency. The AMI Grid Support Manager plays a key role in enhancing grid operations, supporting customer service objectives, and driving safety and operational excellence.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Establishes and communicates performance expectations, work priorities, staff assignments, and procedures.
  • Oversees Grid Support and AMI program, including analog (Legacy, MV90) and technologies, delivering value.
  • Evaluate staffing needs, establish departmental goals & measures, negotiate timelines & schedules, and monitor progress against plans.
  • Ensures adherence to CPS Energy and industry standards and policies.
  • Manages the O&M and capital budgets.
  • Presents program design, procedures, budget, controls, and results to stakeholders.
  • Analyzes cost/benefit of new and existing programs (e.g., AMI 2.0, Legacy AMI).
  • Adhere to enterprise financial controls and processes.
  • Manages and improves processes for daily monitoring and real-time support of grid anomalies, irregularities, and outliers.
  • Manages the data integrity within the MV90 Meter Headend Systems (large commercial, industrial, and ERCOT endpoint devices) in accordance with CPS Energy system records.
  • Identifies, develops, and implements tools and techniques to analyze AMI meter data sets, revealing patterns, trends, and associations.
  • Responsible for the assessment and analysis of new programs and technologies as well as changes to existing programs (Legacy AMI).
  • Supports internal customers with data from meter systems (e.g., Billing, Field Services, Meter Operations, ERCOT).
  • Collaboration among stakeholders to ensure alignment on projects and initiatives with potential upstream and downstream impacts (e.g., AMI 2.0, ADMS, DERMS).
  • Manages employee performance through reviews and communication of measures.
  • Focuses on employee development and performance through evaluations and feedback.
  • Directs critical business area projects, ensuring corporate project management best practices are applied throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Fosters engagement and performance through mentoring and recognition.
  • Supports employee development with resources, coaching, and feedback.
  • Share information and encourage active participation in decision-making processes.
  • Conducts a variety of presentations and training sessions using effective communication skills.
  • Ensures compliance with company standards and quality.
  • Promotes team member safety by encouraging the Safety Culture transition, participation in the Safety Circuit Team and Behavior Based Safety Observations, conducting safety meetings, and ensuring compliance with related safety standards and protocols.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities through root cause analysis and problem-solving.
  • Implements process improvements for efficiency.
  • Collaborates with Metering Services and Procurement on contracts and vendors.
  • Supports customer inquiries, regulatory issues, and customer-specific AMI/Grid Support issues.
  • Analyzes AMI opportunities and assists in Customer Experience Operations (CXO) objectives.
  • Develops staffing forecast to ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Stays current on industry practices and attends relevant conferences.
  • Analyzes Grid Support and AMI opportunities and formulates strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Leadership experience through formal supervisory experience or informally through directing the work of a junior colleague or through significant peer leadership experience.
Demonstrated proficiency in data management skills, combined with a strong understanding of metering techniques and extensive experience in the electric and gas industry.
Develop data management tactics and reporting protocols to track progress, usage, and integration into larger data strategies.
Proficient in navigating an Enterprise Resource Planning tool with the ability to use transactions specific to Grid Support.
Demonstrated experience with the Utility IQ system.
Demonstrated experience with the MV90 system.
Ability to review, analyze, and recommend improvements to systems, processes, and performance measures.
Advanced technical knowledge of utility system operation, distribution or transmission systems or substation technologies, smart grid technologies such as electric vehicles, distribution sensors, substation/distribution automation, etc.
Deep user experience with Analytical tools such as Crystal Reports and Tableau.
Ability to assess issues from multiple organizational and functional perspectives and discern an ideal proposal with more optimal results when appropriate.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, recognizing actual and potential danger, and communicate as required.
Proactive self-starter w/ the ability to work indep & w/ minimal sup, maintaining a high level of accuracy while handling sensitive & confidential information. Skilled in time mgmnt, performing under pressure, & mtg deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Management skills including the ability to establish objectives, execute policy, and lead the development or implementation of a system, program, or process.
Exceptional leadership and organizational skills, with experience overseeing multiple complex issues and managing large-scale projects.
Proven ability to present complex topics to both internal and external stakeholders, along with strong planning and organizational capabilities to ensure the timely and accurate completion of tasks.
Demonstrated ability to network and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders (i.e., customer accounts, trade allies, industry professionals, etc.).
Manages the interaction between internal and external stakeholders to ensure the success of current AMI activities as well as next-generation (AMI 2.0) initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to a team environment, either as a team leader or team member.
Strong ability to translate complex tech concepts into clear, non-tech terms, coupled with excellent org, analytical, & planning skills. Skilled in multi-tasking, neg, problem-solving, and possessing effective verbal, written, and communication abilities.
Proven ability to manage daily comm of exp, mentor others, provide feedback, & collaborate eff with various departments, while maintaining strong interpersonal skills in interacting with peers, co-workers, all organizational levels, and external entities.
Communication and interpersonal skills to influence and motivate others and use of oral and written skills to communicate objectives and action plans.
Must be proficient in the use of applications and tools (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.).
Proficient with using personal computers including spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and presentation applications to gather, analyze, and model information.
24/7 availability to support emergency operations and disasters.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous direct experience with Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI or Smart Meters) implementations.
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis to improve and enhance the performance of the grid.
  • Knowledge of Program Management / Change Management
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional Engineering Registration (P.E.)
  • MBA
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis
