The opportunity:

Sun Life is seeking a highly motivated and strategic Assistant Vice President (AVP) to lead our Commercial Dental and Vision Pricing and Data Analytics and Reporting teams. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in balancing profitability with top-line growth across our dental insurance portfolio to ensure we meet and exceed our financial plan objectives.

You will be responsible for driving both the strategic development of pricing models and the use of data analytics to identify growth opportunities, optimize business performance, and ensure financial sustainability. Your leadership will be critical in shaping pricing strategies that support both competitive market positioning and the achievement of Sun Life's broader business goals.

How you will contribute:

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of actuaries, data analysts, and reporting specialists to drive performance and strategic objectives across dental pricing and analytics.
  • Partners with finance, leadership, business development and sales leaders to set comprehensive goals for dental business growth and profitability.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, ensuring that both teams are aligned in their efforts to achieve Sun Life's financial goals and business targets.
  • Develop and implement performance management and career development strategies to retain and grow talent across both teams.

Commercial Dental Actuarial Pricing - Balancing Profitability and Growth:

  • Oversee the development and execution of dynamic dental pricing strategies that balance profitability with sustainable top-line growth.
  • Leverage actuarial expertise to model and optimize premium rates, assessing the financial implications of risk while ensuring products remain attractive and competitive in the marketplace.
  • Evaluate market trends, claims experience, and customer needs to identify pricing opportunities that support both competitive growth and margin preservation.
  • Work closely with underwriting and product teams to align pricing strategies with product offerings, market demands, and Sun Life's growth objectives.
  • Regularly review and adjust pricing assumptions to ensure we meet financial plan objectives, balancing the need for revenue growth with the long-term sustainability of our dental product portfolio.

Commercial Data Analytics & Reporting - Driving Business Performance:

  • Lead the development and deployment of advanced data analytics models that identify key drivers of business performance, focusing on both top-line revenue growth and cost optimization.
  • Provide strategic insights into claims performance, customer behavior, and market trends, highlighting opportunities for growth, operational efficiencies, and improved customer experience.
  • Create and maintain performance dashboards, visualizations, and executive-level reporting to communicate insights that directly impact Sun Life's financial performance and decision-making.

Strategic Financial Planning & Decision Support:

  • Partner with senior leadership to ensure pricing strategies and data insights are integrated into the financial planning process, helping Sun Life meet short- and long-term financial objectives.
  • Evaluate the trade-offs between premium rates, policyholder acquisition, and retention, ensuring that pricing decisions support both immediate profitability and sustainable revenue growth.
  • Monitor and adjust business performance metrics to ensure that key targets are met, including revenue growth, profitability, and cost management.
  • Lead the identification and quantification of key performance indicators (KPIs) that are critical to achieving financial targets, ensuring alignment across the pricing and analytics teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across sales, marketing, operations, and finance to ensure alignment on pricing strategies and business goals.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, providing actionable insights on market dynamics, pricing strategy, and business performance.
  • Work with product development teams to drive innovative dental product solutions that meet customer needs while also contributing to the company's financial objectives.

What you will bring with you:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, or a related field.
  • Active status in the Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries with a strong track record in dental or health insurance pricing.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in actuarial roles, including leadership experience in pricing and/or data analytics.
  • Proven experience managing teams and working in a cross-functional, collaborative environment.
  • Strong background in balancing profitability and growth, with a focus on delivering measurable financial outcomes.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of dental insurance products, pricing, claims, and industry trends.
  • Expertise in financial modeling, risk assessment, and forecasting to support both profitability and growth objectives.
  • Advanced proficiency in data analytics and reporting tools (e.g., SQL, Python, Tableau, Power BI, R).
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to drive data-driven decision-making that aligns with financial goals and supports business growth.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data and pricing strategies into actionable business insights for senior leadership.

Salary Range: $186,800 - $298,900

At our company, we are committed to pay transparency and equity. The salary range for this role is competitive nationwide, and we strive to ensure that compensation is fair and equitable. Your actual base salary will be determined based on your unique skills, qualifications, experience, education, and geographic location. In addition to your base salary, this position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive award based on your individual performance as well as the overall performance of the business.
