Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Computer Science at
UNC Chapel Hill is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education with eight teaching track faculty, over 30 tenured/tenure track faculty, and eight research faculty, who serve more than one thousand undergraduate majors. Computer Science is the third largest undergraduate major at
UNC-Chapel Hill, with both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree programs. Our department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences which makes for a diverse student population with varied cross-disciplinary interests. Teaching faculty are valued members of our department's egalitarian community with equitable representation in governance. They are supported by talented undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants who are passionate about improving educational outcomes and creating inclusive communities in computer science. |
Position Summary |
The Assistant Director of Career Services will provide vital support to the Director of Career Services and program in delivering comprehensive career development programs and services to students pursuing computing careers, and occasionally, in data science. This role will plan, implement and evaluate various aspects of career services operations, including program management, student advising, employer engagement, and administrative tasks. They will counsel both undergraduate and graduate students (totaling over 1,500), in areas such as interview preparation, technical resume reviews, departmental career event management, and other duties as assigned. The Assistant Director will work closely with
UNC Student Computer Science Career Assistants to deliver high-quality programming and student support. The position may need to adjust work hours (e.g., to evenings, and weekends) to meet student, employer, and organizational needs. The role will report to the Director of Career Services in the Department of Computer Science. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience in career development, counseling, recruiting, or a related field. Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, employers, faculty, and staff. Attention to detail and accuracy in data management and record-keeping. Familiarity with database management and career services systems. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively across an organization and/or divisions. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
A post-baccalaureate degree in a relevant field such as education, counseling, or computer science is preferred. Experience in a student or employer-facing position (e.g., student or career services). University work experience is preferred. Experience working with students from a technical or engineering background is encouraged. Thorough knowledge of career coaching/career counseling, career assessment tools, all aspects of the job search process, resume writing, business correspondence, interviewing (i.e. behavioral interviews) and employer networking and recruiting activities. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
