Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The role of the Environment, Health and Safety (
EHS) department is primarily environment, health and safety functions at the University. In support of the University's core mission,
EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities. By developing
EHS programs and performing various periodic inspections we can provide a safe work place, ensure a process of compliance and minimize future potential liabilities.
EHS is organized into eight (8) sections: Biological Safety, Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety & Emergency Response, Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety and Business & Support. |
Position Summary |
The primary purpose of the Industrial Hygiene Specialist is to serve as a field hygienist who oversees the University's drinking water testing program and the confined space program. This position will have the knowledge to ensure University policies as well as local, state and federal regulations and guidelines training to drinking water and confined space are implemented on campus. This individual also performs safety inspections for campus shops as a member of the Hazards Management Program (
HMP) team and services as an Emergency Response (ER) team member. This position will provide general IH support including investigations and monitoring as needed.
Environment, Health and Safety (
EHS) has a comprehensive, campus-wide drinking water management program to ensure the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. This program is supplemental to the required regulatory testing conducted by the Orange Water and Sewer Authority (
OWASA), the campus public works authority. The program includes routine testing of drinking water fixtures for lead and testing for other parameters per requests, complaints, or new regulations. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Methods, proper techniques, equipment, materials, tools and standard practices for obtaining and testing water samples; identifying, testing and correcting problems in water quality.
Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
Skill in organization.
Skill in time management and setting priorities.
Skill in technical writing.
Skill in operating/calibrating/maintaining water quality analyzers and industrial hygiene instrumentation.
Ability to maintain a database for tracking drinking water testing data.
Ability to analyze and interpret analytical data. Able to identify problems and draw valid conclusions to solve problems.
Ability to apply independent judgement, initiative and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle special assignments and projects. Demonstrated organization and planning skills and ability to adapt to varying work situations and multiple tasks.
Ability to interpret
OSHA,
EPA and NC regulations with regards to drinking water and confined space. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience with plumbing systems and drinking water regulations is highly desirable. Preferred incumbent will have familiarity with
OSHA confined space regulations |
Required Licenses/Certifications |
Must possess a valid NC Driver's License and an acceptable driving record. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Work includes walking and moderate exertion, carrying water sampling equipment such as coolers containing full water sample bottles. This position requires physical agility (i.e. stoop, crawl, ascend/descend ladders/stairs/scaffolds, etc.). This position may involve exposure to hazardous materials as part of the Emergency Response Team. Because this position may be exposed to hazardous materials, incumbent in this position must be fit-tested for a respirator and participate in the Respiratory Protection Program |
