Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of the University Cashier reports to the Treasury Services Director and is part of the Finance and Operations Division. The office serves as the central office for the collection and reporting of University revenues. The responsibilities of the office include billing, collection, monitoring and reporting of tuition & fees, other departmental charges and campus based loans, which include Federal and University long-term and short-term loans. The office is the regulatory authority for ensuring that University revenues are invested in interest bearing accounts in a timely manner in accordance with Federal and State Laws.
Position Summary
The NRA Student Award Tax Accountant is responsible for the accurate and compliant processing of tax obligations for Nonresident Alien ( NRA) student awards processed through the Student Account. Awards may be made through Financial Aid or the Graduate Student Funding System. The role involves collaborating with Payroll Services, Accounts Payable, International Students & Scholar Services, the Graduate School, Financial Aid, and IT to streamline the tax processes for NRA student awards, particularly by leveraging the University's Nonresident Tax Software, currently Sprintax. This role supports UNC's commitment to operational efficiency, compliance with IRS regulations, and provides essential guidance and support to nonresident students on their tax obligations and 1042-S documentation. The position plays a key role in the financial health and compliance of UNC's student award programs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Mid-career with Master's and 1-2 years experience; or Bachelor's and 2-4 years experience.

* Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Experience in tax compliance or accounting, with a focus on international tax issues.
* Familiarity with tax software, especially Sprintax or similar Nonresident Alien tax applications.
* Experience within higher education finance or managing student award processes.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
This position requires the ability to work under tight deadlines, especially during peak tax seasons, and communicate effectively while maintaining a high degree of accuracy in tax processing and reporting.
