What You'll Do in This Position SRNS is seeking to hire a Transportation Safety Engineer to provide assistance and guidance for all hazardous material Packaging and Transportation activities being conducted at SRS, including onsite transport and offsite (in commerce) shipments.
The Transportation Safety Engineer provides support to all SRS operating facilities through the resolution of technical and organizational issues in the field of Packaging and Transportation. This position supports and maintains technical programs necessary to support capabilities within assigned organizational and programmatic areas. Specific programmatic responsibilities include maintenance of the Transportation Safety Document (TSD) and maintaining Manual 19Q Transportation Safety. The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting with both programmatic oversight and day-to-day support for all transportation safety basis documents and direct operations/facility support. The position assists with acquisition of packages for site use. Additionally, this position provides support for the organization that assists facilities and organizations in the shipment of hazardous materials. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Plan and develop solutions to packaging and transportation technical tasks and project objectives. * Assist site facilities to develop solutions for new packaging and transportation needs as they arise. * Assist more senior technical professionals with the development of Transportation Safety Basis documents governed by 10CFR830 and DOE Order 460.1D. * Assume technical responsibility and provide packaging and transportation input to assigned facility operations. * Cooperate with facility personnel, Site Transportation organization, SRNL and procurement personnel to provide to provide solutions to hazmat packaging needs. * Providing input to the SRS Transportation Safety Manual, develop revisions to Onsite Safety Assessments, and develop supporting documents. * Provide guidance and assistance to the operating facilities with the Transportation Safety Question (TSQ) program including initiating/reviewing TSQs. * Apply technical knowledge to help define cost-effective solutions and/or improved capabilities to support Site packaging needs. * Review non-radioactive and radioactive hazmat packaging. * Prepare cost and schedule estimates for proposed projects/tasks. * Interfacing with packaging vendors and serving as the SRS point of contact. * Interact with DOE-SR and other external organizations on packaging matters. * Develop creative solutions to Site issues that arise with both onsite and offsite packaging and transportation challenges. Apply knowledge in field of specialization or experience in other technical fields, to resolve packaging and transportation issues. Incorporate technical practices and a variety of complex features such as technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning. Aid in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise. Provide guidance and assistance both inside and outside department lines to programs seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientific principles. Evaluate the results of programs and prepare reports and recommendations based on these evaluations. Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution. Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology. Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management. Occasionally prepare reports for external publication. Demonstrate creative ability through medium of problem solving, engineering reports, and technical papers.
Security Clearance Information SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance. Qualifications We Require Bachelor degree in applicable science or engineering discipline
Other Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical, Environmental, Fire Protection, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if required.
Qualifications We Desire Hazardous Material training preferred. Knowledge of Hazardous Material regulations (49CFR173), Type B Packaging regulations (10CFR71), and Nuclear Safety Management (10CFR830).
